Work Location:

Public Works - Environmental Services section, 10431 Woodman Road, Henrico, VA 23060. The position is primarily in-person, with the possibility of remote work depending on the selected student's skills and assigned responsibilities.

Internship Status:

Paid internship at an hourly rate of $16.00 per hour; students can work up to 29 hours per week based on current work projects and the selected student's schedule. The intern will support the Vector Control and Surveillance Program and Standing Water Initiative, gaining practical experience in environmental fieldwork, vector surveillance, research, data collection and analysis, project implementation, and community outreach. The intern may assist with a variety of field research, technical, and administrative activities, including:

Pollinator Enhancement Project:

Vegetation and insect surveillance, site monitoring, and site management

Mosquito Surveillance:

Mosquito trapping, surveillance, identification, data collection, and related field activities

Tick Surveillance:

Evaluation procedures, pilot trapping and surveillance methodologies, and project development

Pesticide Treatment Support:

Driving and navigation for pesticide treatment activities, treatment-route revisions, and related County GIS applications

Environmental Monitoring:

Rainfall collection, environmental data recording, and evaluation of environmental factors affecting pest and vector populations

Research and Project Development:

Research, project design, implementation support, and development of pilot programs for enhanced trapping and surveillance

Data and Administrative Support:

Data entry, organization, analysis, documentation, and administrative project implementation

Community Outreach:

The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently.
