Job Title:
Environmental Test Technician Job Description The Environmental Test Technician supports air emissions testing projects at industrial and manufacturing sites by setting up, operating, and maintaining environmental testing equipment in the field and in the warehouse. This entry-level role offers hands-on experience in the environmental industry, with structured training, paid certifications, and a clear path for advancement into engineering and project leadership positions. Responsibilities Perform third-party EPA air emissions testing and monitoring at industrial and manufacturing sites, including power plants, steel mills, refineries, and manufacturing facilities. Transport testing equipment to client sites using company vehicles, ensuring safe loading, unloading, and secure transport of all instruments and materials. Set up and break down testing equipment at job sites, including installation of sampling lines and related apparatus at ground level and at elevated heights. Record field data accurately and completely, and collect environmental samples in accordance with established procedures and EPA test methods. Calibrate testing equipment and instruments before, during, and after testing to ensure accurate and reliable measurements. Assist engineers with air quality testing procedures, including preparation, execution, and documentation of test runs. Follow environmental, health, and safety protocols at all times, including safe work practices when working at heights and around industrial processes. Organize, load, and secure testing equipment into vehicles in preparation for upcoming jobs, ensuring all required tools and materials are available. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of testing equipment and accessories to keep systems in proper working condition. Use company-provided resources and training materials to study for and obtain certifications for EPA Test Methods 1-5. Work collaboratively as part of a field team, typically ranging from 3 to 20 people depending on project size, to complete testing assignments safely and efficiently. Support warehouse operations on non-field days by laying out and preparing testing equipment, loading vehicles, cleaning equipment, and performing general maintenance tasks. Adapt to varying work schedules and project demands, including occasional weekend work and extended hours during larger projects. Communicate clearly with team members regarding job status, equipment needs, safety concerns, and site conditions. Essential Skills Minimum of a high school diploma. 1+ year of experience in a field testing, maintenance, industrial, construction, landscaping, or other hands-on role is preferred. Ability to work comfortably at heights of 100 to 400 feet above ground level while following all safety procedures. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds as part of daily duties in the field and warehouse. Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools, equipment, and mechanical systems. Experience or comfort working in field-based roles or outdoor environments. Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a field crew. Willingness to obtain OSHA 10-hour safety certification with company-provided training. Ability to follow detailed procedures and environmental, health, and safety protocols. Reliable data recording and sample collection skills with attention to detail. Willingness to travel with varying frequency from week to week, including occasional weekend work. Additional Skills & Qualifications B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field is preferred but not required. Previous experience as a field technician, environmental technician, or in a similar industrial or testing role is a plus. Familiarity with environmental testing, air quality monitoring, or EPA methods is beneficial. Prior OSHA 10-hour certification is a plus; training will be provided if not already obtained. Demonstrated interest in the environmental industry and air quality or emissions testing. Strong work ethic and willingness to learn complex testing procedures and EPA Test Methods 1-5. Ability to adapt to changing weather, schedules, and site conditions while maintaining safety and quality standards. Interest in long-term career growth along a defined path from Test Technician to Test Engineer, Team Lead, Project Manager, and beyond. Work Environment This role is based out of an office in Las Vegas, NV, with most time spent working in the field at industrial sites such as power plants, steel mills, refineries, and manufacturing plants. Field workdays typically range from 8 to 10+ hours, while warehouse days are generally 8 hours. Work is performed in a team environment, with crews typically ranging from 3 to 20 people depending on project size. Many projects require setting up tests at heights of 100 to 400 feet above ground level, where temperatures are usually lower and winds can be stronger; team members are encouraged to bring extra layers of clothing to stay comfortable. The position involves both indoor and outdoor work and exposure to varying weather conditions. When not scheduled for field work, you will work in the warehouse preparing testing equipment, loading vehicles, cleaning equipment, and performing general maintenance tasks. Work volume can vary with project schedules and weather; jobs may be delayed due to severe rain, sleet, snow, or ice, and during slower seasons there is typically warehouse or home-office work available. For larger projects, you may work extended hours and up to approximately 60 hours per week including paid travel time. The typical attire in the field includes jeans, a long-sleeve T-shirt, boots (non-steel toe acceptable), and additional outerwear such as a coat and stocking cap in colder months. The company provides a structured environment with OSHA 10-hour training paid for by the employer and offers a clear career path from Test Technician through various engineering and project management roles. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elmhurst, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.50 - $22.50/hr.
