Job Description

A Pretreatment Inspector, under direct supervision, performs paraprofessional level activities related to the implementation of the approved Industrial Pretreatment Program, Hauled Waste Program and the Mercury Minimization Program. An employee in this class performs routine evaluations of data and information related to wastewater and other discharges. This work includes making recommendations which can result in enforcement action against the discharger. An employee in this class will perform routine and emergency inspections of non-domestic users, gather samples as necessary for testing, and perform other related duties as assigned. 1. Possess a Bachelor's degree with major course work in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or a closely related field; AND Have minimum of one (1) year full-time, paid work experience in an environmental enforcement program, an industrial or municipal environmental regulatory program or a laboratory setting, with emphasis in data processing; OR Possess an Associate's degree with major course work in science; AND Have a minimum of five (5) years full-time, paid work experience in an environmental enforcement program, an industrial or municipal environmental regulatory program or a laboratory setting, with emphasis in data processing. 2. Possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
An employee in this class will be required to engage in such activities as lifting and carrying objects weighing up to sixty (60) pounds and standing or walking for extended periods of time.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
An employee in this class will be required to work under standard laboratory conditions with hazardous chemicals and offensive odors. Some outdoor work will be required in all types of weather conditions. Entry into industries will be required. Sampling of certain types of waste with offensive odors and appearance will be required.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
