Program (ATSDR's Partnership to Promote Local Efforts to Reduce Environmental Exposure) is within the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB) in the Center for Health Protection under the Public Health Division in NMDOH. Why does the job exist? The Health Assessor Epidemiologist analyzes the relationships between environmental exposures and other risk factors and public health outcomes by collaborating with other staff and governmental agency partners. This position also provides support to educational efforts under the NM ATSDR's Partnership to Promote Local Efforts to Reduce Environmental Exposure (APPLETREE) Program and works with the Environmental Public Health Tracking Program and the NM Tumor Registry, particularly related to Cancer Concerns Workgroup activities. The incumbent will provide EHEB on-call services one to two days a month and support other bureau initiatives such as legislative bill analysis and public health urgencies. How does it get done? The Health Assessor Epidemiologist will collaborate with APPLETREE and Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau colleagues, as well as ATSDR and stakeholders throughout New Mexico. The Health Assessor Epidemiologist uses existing/accepted methods to evaluate risk of disease development given exposure to chemicals and if necessary, modify methods as appropriate given exposure pathways or uncertainties. Tasks include evaluating pathways of exposure to environmental contaminants; assessing public health implications of these exposures; identifying, coordinating, and implementing appropriate public interventions to reduce exposures; and working with the Program Coordinator to develop materials to educate health professionals and communities. Minimum Qualification Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and one (1) year in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel with occasional overnight stay may be required.
