Gemologist / Jewelry & Gemstone Evaluator Gold Buyers of Buford is looking for an experienced jewelry professional with a strong background in gemology, gemstone identification, and diamond evaluation. We are specifically looking for someone who is comfortable working with mounted diamonds and colored gemstones and can accurately identify, measure, and evaluate stones without removing them from their settings. Responsibilities Identify diamonds and colored gemstones using standard gemological methods and equipment Measure mounted diamonds and gemstones accurately Estimate carat weight of mounted stones using measurements and appropriate formulas/tables Identify common natural gemstones and distinguish them from simulants Evaluate diamonds for approximate color, clarity, cut, and overall quality while mounted Recognize common diamond and gemstone treatments Identify synthetic/lab-grown stones and know when additional testing is necessary Inspect jewelry for stone condition, damage, chips, abrasions, and other issues Identify common precious metals, jewelry construction methods, and styles Assist with evaluating jewelry being purchased from customers Accurately document gemstone measurements, identification, and relevant characteristics Handle valuable jewelry, diamonds, gemstones, and precious metals carefully and professionally Preferred Qualifications Professional experience in gemology, jewelry appraisal, diamond grading, estate jewelry, jewelry buying, or a related field GIA Graduate Gemologist (GG) credential is strongly preferred , but equivalent hands-on experience will be considered Strong knowledge of diamonds and colored gemstones Experience identifying gemstones using tools such as a loupe, microscope, refractometer, polariscope, dichroscope, UV light, and other standard gemological equipment Experience measuring mounted stones using calipers or other appropriate measuring equipment Ability to recognize common synthetics, simulants, treatments, and lab-grown diamonds Familiarity with estate, vintage, and modern jewelry is a plus Knowledge of precious metals and jewelry manufacturing/repair techniques is a plus What We're Really Looking For We need someone with practical, hands-on gemological experience , not simply retail jewelry sales experience. The ideal candidate should be able to examine a piece of jewelry and confidently determine: What type of gemstone is present Whether additional testing is necessary to make a reliable identification The dimensions and approximate weight of a mounted stone The approximate quality characteristics of mounted diamonds Whether stones show indications of treatments, synthetic origin, or simulants Whether stones or settings have damage or condition issues that affect value Accuracy, attention to detail, and knowing the limitations of an identification are extremely important in this position.
