Job Description

Casting "The Fundamentals," a grounded, character-driven short inspired by a true story.
Synopsis:
Set between 1985 and the mid-1990s, the film follows Joey, a young boy abandoned at his grandparents' rural home, who discovers an old instructional basketball tape. With no formal training, no mentor, and little time outside of hard labor, Joey teaches himself the game in secret—transforming imagination, repetition, and sheer will into something extraordinary. This short will serve as both a standalone festival piece and a proof-of-concept for a feature film currently in development.
Tone:
"Moonlight" meets "Hoop Dreams" with a touch of analog nostalgia.
Themes:
Resilience, self-invention, found family, discipline, escape through sport. Because of the physical environments (rural locations, outdoor work, basketball sequences), performers should be comfortable with physically active roles and working in natural conditions.
