Job Description
This Assistant Research Scientist will join the research laboratory of Dr. Yuriy Usachev. Research in the Usachev lab focuses on examination of novel mitochondrial proteins, their properties and functions and involves an array of molecular biological and genetic techniques, isolated mitochondria assays, cellular and subcellular Ca 2+ imaging and transgenic mouse work. Key Areas of Responsibility To conduct experimental research work in a biomedical laboratory studying mitochondria, including testing and evaluating current procedures; to judge the validity of experimental data obtained; to prepare manuscripts; to prepare data for presentation at meetings and in manuscripts; to instruct students and other personnel in neurophysiological and molecular biological techniques and in the preparation of primary neuronal cultures.
Experiments, Simulations, Modeling or Theoretical Investigations :
Initiate research design and methodology to study novel mitochondrial proteins involved in transport of Ca 2+ and other ions. Originate design, research conduct, and coordination using isolated mitochondrial assays, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, viral vector design, Ca 2+ imaging, and Seahorse assays. Maintain laboratory equipment as needed. Develop hypotheses to be tested and select methodology. Work independently on complex research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator.Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation :
Perform advanced data analysis techniques using Phylogeny, alignment, BLAST, and other gene analysis tools. Develop new applications of existing data analysis techniques.Dissemination of Research Results :
Demonstrate strong publication record; prepare and submit first author manuscripts for publication. May contribute to public data archives or other resources, e.g., software, models, or on-line tools to support scientific research.Research Proposals/Grants :
Serve as co-PI, contribute to research proposals and funding agency reports. May write research proposal to obtain independent funding as PI. Select and purchase equipment as needed.Service :
Seek leadership opportunities appropriate to the scientific discipline, which may include serving on proposal review panels and contributing to peer-review process. May serve on departmental or University committees. May organize outreach efforts in alliance with funding sources.Human Resources/Supervision :
Mentor undergraduate and graduate students. May provide functional and/ or administrative supervision for staff. Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved. Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public. Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs. Many faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences. Position Responsibilities Conduct research in the area of mitochondrial biology. More specifically, identify and study novel mitochondrial proteins involved in Ca 2+ transport, such as TMEM65 and MCU. Develop hypotheses to be tested and methodology for evaluating results. Identify expression and function of TMEM65 and MCU in various tissues and under various pathological conditions. Develop molecular tools to study these proteins, including shRNA constructs, specific mutants and reporters. Examine function of TMEM65 and MCU by using isolated mitochondrial assays. Examine regulatory properties of TMEM65 at genetic and protein levels. Develop protocols for using iPSC cells including CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, gene transfer and differentiation. Develop new mouse lines with conditional deletion and overexpression of TMEM65 and MCU. Use and characterize mouse models of tauopathy, epilepsy, ALS and other pathological conditions. Prepare research results for publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as invited reviews in books or review journals. Prepare seminars, discussion and lectures for dissemination of knowledge and results of research at national and international meetings. Develop new proposals for research and obtain support for new and/or continuing research activities. Manage all or part of a research project including monitoring of project funds, as well as coordination of data generation and analysis. Participate in determining research priorities and planning programs of research. Train investigators and support staff as requested by supervisor . Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.Percent of Time:
