The Scientist will provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Aging within the National Institutes of Health.Duties and Responsibilities:
Evaluate new techniques, instruments, and software for potential incorporation into current SOP. Advance the science in the laboratory through new procedures and discoveries. Design and conduct experiments and studies requiring the application of a broad professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles. Work with staff on the interpretation of experiments performed by research scientists. Work with staff on the interpretation of experiments performed by research scientists. Independently conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments. Train staff on the proper usage of laboratory instruments and equipment. Submit and gain approval of laboratory animal study protocols. Review scientific equipment and resources (e.g. reagents, stocks of frozen sells, animal samples) including acquisition, documentation and storage. Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts. Maintain the data management for all processed compounds. Maintain project data quality; analyze and interpret project data. Work with staff to confirm assay results and evaluate new techniques and instruments; search literature; propose, design and test alternative assays for difficult screening targets; confirm assay results; develop secondary assays. Work with Principal Investigators in scheduling and prioritizing instrument usage. Coordinate projects being developed in the laboratory, proposing SAR strategies and monitoring their progress. Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups/conferences. Co-author manuscripts on research projects; publish in peer-reviewed journals. Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals; prepare PowerPoint presentations as appropriate. Review, edit, and, as needed, write first drafts of papers, posters and manuscripts. Assist the lab staff in the creation and preparation of a variety of documents required by the lab's scientific activities. Produce research reports and regularly communicate results to staff and collaborators. Maintain a portfolio of research grants in the assigned area. Perform scientific and administrative reviews and analyses of grant applications/proposal from a programmatic viewpoint. Provide scientific and technical expertise to all visiting fellows, post-docs, and technicians. Select, devise, plan and execute experiments in the context of the laboratory overall research program. 1 Perform a variety of experimental procedures including isolation and analysis of DNA, RNA and protein by routine molecular biology methods, including in situ hybridization, RNA Scope, immunohistochemical staining, automated DNA sequencing, cell culture, Southern, Northern and Western blot analysis, real-time RTPCR and protein extraction. 2 Perform a variety of experimental procedures on the expression of insulin isoforms and genetics of insulin signaling in the brain AD and MCI. 3 Act as primary investigator in animal research studies and develop animal model systems, as related to Neuroscience and optogenetics in specific. Maintain tissue culture and lab space in a clean and orderly fashion. Evaluate new types of experimental approaches and recommend changes to SOPs based on knowledge of scientific literature, available facilities, and research needs. Determine experimental approaches to be applied in order to evaluate the hypotheses under investigation and for planning and carrying out those experiments. Perform analysis and interpretation of the data for developing strategies for pursuing significant observation and for ensuring accuracy and reproducibility of results. Interpret experimental techniques and procedures. Search all pertinent literature and references. Devise, modify and perform analyses. Evaluate and interpret data and make modifications as needed. Communicate results and methods in reports, presentations and manuscripts for peer reviewed publications and at local, national and international meetings. Coordinate the training of laboratory personnel, research associates, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists, students and others in specialized technologies. Work products and documents related to selecting, devising, planning and executing experiments; perform a variety of experimental procedures including isolation and analysis of DNA, RNA and protein by routine molecular biology methods; perform a variety of experimental procedures on the expression of insulin isoforms and genetics of insulin signaling in the brain AD and MCI. Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or similar field Knowledge of bioinformatics, and application to large proteomics and gene data sets, and their interpretation Skilled inMS Office Suite Preferred Qualifications:
