A Medical Laboratory Scientist specializes in collecting and analyzing body fluids using complex chemical and microscopic tests. Workplaces include clinical laboratories at hospitals, references labs, biotech labs and non-clinical industrial labs.
The job encompasses instrument operation, specimen preparation for analysis, result reporting, and the use of laboratory information system. Basic knowledge and some experience in wet chemistry techniques are important. All testing is for patient care.

Shift:
Day shift, approx. 7am start time The opening is in the Toxicology section where clinical toxicology testing is performed. The specimens used for testing are urine and blood. Certification is not required. A bachelor of science in biological, chemical or medical technology is required. Instruments for testing are HPLC, LCMSMS and other chemistry analyzers. Experience in patient testing using these instruments is desirable, but not required.
Required Qualifications:
Education Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or university in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science. - May consider a bachelor's degree in science with a combination of relevant work experience in a comparable laboratory setting . Proof of educational transcripts must be submitted at time of application. Experience Relevant work experience in a medical laboratory is required if MLS/MT degree is not obtained. Certification/Licensure Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - ASCP, or NCLS certification preferred. This position may also be listed as: Medical Lab Scientist, Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist What you will do: Records and/or enters laboratory computer results of tests performed and advises supervisor spurious, unusual or highly abnormal results before release of results for reporting. Reports results of tests ordered stat and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner and according to established policies and procedures. Compares test results with previous patient test results when indicated, calling attention of supervisor or pathologist to unusual fluctuations. Performs required quality control and equipment maintenance and calibrates and operates laboratory equipment used in performance of the tests pertinent to the section) to which assigned. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations, in accordance with department policy on procedure. Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing. Contacts nursing unit or client office personnel regarding results and for clarification of requests and other routine problems which may arise.
