Job Description
Medical Physicist Description New Mexico Cancer Center (NMCC), as a subsidiary of New Mexico Oncology and Hematology Consultants (NMOHC), in Albuquerque, NM, is a premier free-standing cancer center that treats more than 500 patients every year. The physics/technical group consists of 1 chief physicist, 1 senior medical physicist, 2 junior physicists, 3 dosimetrists, 1 junior dosimetrist, 2 service engineers and information system administrators. The clinical group consists of 4 radiation oncologists, 2 nurses, 1 chief therapist, and 8 staff therapists. Equipment The main campus has two
LINACs:
two Varian TrueBeam systems that are beam-matched, a kilovoltage superficial x-ray unit (Sensus SRT) and a HDR Bravos unit. Patient simulation includes a Siemens SOMATOM CT and a Phillips PET-CT. One satellite clinic has a Varian 21iX and a Phillips Big Bore CT. The main treatment planning system/OIS is Eclipse/ARIA. AlignRT is used at the main campus forSGRT/DIBH
treatments. Other software consists of Total QA, DoseLab, MIM Maestro, Limbus AI, Radformation products (ClearCalc, ClearCheck, EZFluence, RadMachine and Quickcode). Clinical The medical physicist will work in collaboration with other medical physicists and the Director of Medical Physics to support daily clinical physics tasks and duties, and to manage the clinic Quality Assurance Management (QAM) program, which include the following principal duties and responsibilities: Oversee, or perform monthly QA activities of the linear accelerators and CT simulator. QA tasks require work in late evenings 2-3 times a week, and, occasionally, during the weekend. Perform required calibrations of general and specific radiotherapy equipment. Implement quality assurance, quality control and relevant safety measures with regards to patient's treatments. Participate in the implementation of new technologies into clinical workflow. Spot check and review all technical and scientific data generated from simulation through treatment to ensure accuracy and precision of patient's treatment plan. Perform routine dose calculations. Generates patient data required for treatment calculation, compensating filter design, mold construction and blocking device fabrication. Perform weekly patient chart checks for any dose and mathematical errors, prescription changes and image review changes that may have occurred throughout the course of treatment. Perform HDR brachytherapy treatment planning and delivery according to prescription. Document individualized HDR treatment plans that include all necessary dosimetry and technical data in patient's treatment chart. Perform external beam radiotherapy treatment planning, when needed. Obtain routine or specialized dosimetry information for physical parameters on treatment units. Perform applications of specific in vivo dosimetry (Ion chamber, Film or MOSFET) to special clinical problems. Consult with radiation oncologist to solve any dosimetric problems and/or devices special techniques necessary for the treatment. Work with the simulation therapist to ensure good simulation/CT techniques and results for HDR and external beam therapy patients. Know the rules and regulations by the state governing the usage of radioactive materials and apply that knowledge in good practice. Assist management with identifying cost containment initiatives or revenue enhancement projects. Accurately enter and review daily charges. Review and audit patient charges at the time of patient chart close-out. Participate in Clinic's Radiation Safety Program, CQI program, ACR Accreditation process. Qualifications Master's, Ph.D., or DMP Degree in Medical Physics or equivalent fields. Certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR), or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP), or Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM), or equivalent certifying bodies. Board-eligible candidates will also be considered. Must have passed ABR Part I. Others Demonstrates outstanding verbal and written communication skills to relate important clinically relevant information to other professionals. Makes decisions independently and acknowledges accountability for such decisions. Performs critical thinking to solve problems independently. Manages day-to-day activity as assigned by a team leader or supervisor. Prioritizes tasks to ensure QA/QC is done in a timely fashion. Demonstrates appropriate communication skills and use of appropriate language with clients of various age groups. Attends meetings & serves on committees as requested by management. Participates in department functions and activities. Occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs. may be involved.
