Job Description

THE POSITION

The Radiation Health Physicist 2 with the Department of Environmental Protection is an exciting opportunity to work at the center of radiation safety in Pennsylvania. This role allows you to apply technical knowledge in meaningful ways that support public well-being. You will contribute to licensing, safety evaluations, and statewide radiation protection programs. It is a rewarding position for someone who enjoys scientific problem solving and public service.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports radiation safety programs by reviewing license applications, preparing permits, and helping maintain key regulatory initiatives. As a Radiation Health Physicist 2, you will perform the following duties:

Technical Reviews:

Conduct evaluations of license applications, including training qualifications, equipment suitability, and safety procedures

Safety Oversight:

Assess radiation hazards and verify compliance with Commonwealth regulations and Federal guidance

Program Support:

Assist with accelerator licensing, registration of radiation producing machines, and maintenance of MQSA requirements

Data Management:

Maintain accurate records, analyze program effectiveness, and update electronic data systems according to policy

Policy Development:

Collaborate with staff to establish procedures, prepare licensing guides, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives

Emergency Response:

Participate in radiation incident response activities and complete required training Interested in learning more? Additional details regarding this position can be found in the position description.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

Telework:

You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

One year as a Radiation Health Physicist 1; or Two years of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation physics, radiation biology, nuclear physics, or applied health physics; or One year of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and possession of a certificate of registration issued by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists; or Two years of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree with major course work in the physical, biological, or radiological sciences or in nuclear engineering, that includes 20 credits in health physics or radiological sciences; or Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Other Requirements:

PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title. You must be able to perform essential job functions. This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. If no applicable union-covered bidders apply, other applicants may be considered. The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations. Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher.
