Job Summary The R&D Shop Manager leads the daily operations of Mesa Power Solutions' development shop, supporting engine, genset, and distribution gear development through prototype fabrication, testing, machining, welding, and product validation activities. This role provides leadership and mentorship to engineering technician teams, manages shop resources and budgets, and partners closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, and Project Management to ensure successful product development and commercialization. The ideal candidate combines strong leadership and technical expertise with experience in power generation systems, fabrication, testing, and New Product Introduction (NPI). This position serves as a key link between engineering design and physical execution, driving continuous improvement while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards, including EPA and UL requirements. testing, prototype development, and First Article Inspection (FAI) methodologies is essential. Essential Duties Lead and mentor a team of engineering technician teams, providing guidance and support to ensure project success and professional growth. Collaborate with management, project managers, logistics and other cross functional departments to help achieve the commercialization goals of Mesa. Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement solutions to enhance productivity and product reliability. Establish shop priorities and allocate personnel, equipment, and resources to meet project milestones and deadlines, proactively identifying and addressing any issues or risks. Support troubleshooting and resolving complex engineering challenges related to engines, generators and testing. Establish shop priorities and allocate personnel, equipment, and resources to meet project schedules and business objectives. Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements while promoting a proactive safety culture. Oversee maintenance, calibration, and repair of machine tools, fabrication equipment, and shop infrastructure. Develop, implement and improve shop procedures, work instructions, and best practices that support rapid prototyping and product development activities. Manage procurement of materials, tooling, equipment, and external manufacturing services required to support development programs. Monitor shop budgets, capital expenditures, and operating expenses to ensure responsible use of company resources. Track project status, communicate risks, and provide regular updates to stakeholders regarding schedule, resource constraints, and technical challenges. Maintain accurate records related to equipment, maintenance, tooling inventories, certifications, and shop performance metrics. Lead implementation of new manufacturing technologies, equipment, and processes that enhance R&D capabilities. All other duties assigned. Education Required 4 Year / Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering, or related technical field from an accredited university and/or 5+ years of experience in lieu of degree. Experience Required 5 years of management or leadership experience. 5 years of experience related to fabrication, welding, engine development and/or repair, power generation development and/or repair, or electrical system development and/or repair. Preferred 3 years of experience with diesel engines, natural gas engines, power generation equipment, emissions systems, or engine testing facilities. 3 years of experience managing procurement of materials, tooling, capital equipment, and budgeting. Honorably discharged service veterans are preferred. Certifications, Licenses & Registrations Required Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to mentor and develop high-performing engineering technician teams. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and teams simultaneously while ensuring alignment with strategic business objectives. Skilled in fostering cross-functional collaboration across engineering, logistics, and senior management to support efficient product development and commercialization. Ability to identify process improvements and implement solutions that enhance productivity, reliability, and overall team performance. Proficient in project planning, resource allocation, milestone tracking, and proactive risk management. Strong communication skills for effectively presenting technical updates and recommendations to executive leadership. Ability to create and maintain a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and accountability across engineering functions. Deep understanding of product development life cycles and generator assembly processes. Mechanical and power systems knowledge including engines, generators, and power distribution. Background of mechanical and electrical testing setups and best practices. Experience in fabrication processes (Machining, welding, cutting, bending, etc.). Ability to create and manage department budgets and support budget and CAPEX planning. Must be able to fluently speak, write, and read in English.
