Job Description

Position Overview:
The Tribal Treasurer Intern will work directly with the Tribal Treasurer to gain hands-on experience in Tribal finance, data analysis, financial oversight, research, project management, and policy development. The intern will assist with gathering and interpreting financial and programmatic data, identifying trends and patterns, evaluating potential outcomes and risks, and supporting projects that inform financial planning and Tribal decision-making. This placement is designed to provide the intern with an understanding of how data, research, and financial information are used to support responsible decision-making within the Tribal government.

$3,000 semester stipend
Key Responsibilities:
The intern may assist the Tribal Treasurer with: Gathering, organizing, and analyzing financial, demographic, and programmatic data. Reviewing both small and large data sets to identify trends, patterns, and potential areas for further analysis. Examining data related to community assistance, loans, student support, sports donations, and other approved areas of Tribal financial support. Using Microsoft Excel and other approved software to organize, analyze, and present information. Assisting with data entry and maintaining accurate and organized records. Comparing information across different reports or data sources to identify trends and relationships. Assisting with monthly and annual financial analysis and basic forecasting. Developing sample scenarios to evaluate how changes in participation, enrollment, community needs, or other factors may affect future financial needs. Assisting with evaluating potential risks, benefits, and outcomes related to proposed projects, programs, or financial decisions. Conducting research related to finance, policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and Tribal governance. Preparing research summaries, reports, spreadsheets, presentations, or briefing materials for the Tribal Treasurer. Assisting with project tracking and gaining exposure to project management practices. Participating in meetings and other Tribal government activities as appropriate. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The ideal candidate should demonstrate: Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills. Attention to detail and accuracy. Proficiency or experience with Microsoft Excel. Ability to organize and interpret quantitative and qualitative information. Ability to identify patterns and draw reasonable conclusions from available data. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to explain research findings or complex information clearly. Interest in financial analysis, forecasting, research, or data modeling. Willingness to learn new software, programs, and analytical systems. Ability to evaluate information when outcomes may be uncertain or incomplete. Strong organizational and project management skills. Professionalism and sound judgment when working with sensitive information. Experience completing research papers, laboratory projects, data-analysis assignments, or similar academic projects is preferred. Special Projects Depending on the Tribal Treasurer's needs, the intern may assist with special analytical projects involving historical or current financial data. Projects may include developing spreadsheets, tracking systems, financial projections, or models that enable comparisons over time. The intern may also assist with research and analysis intended to identify potential risks, evaluate program outcomes, or support recommendations for improvements to policies and procedures within the Treasurer's area of responsibility Learning Objectives By the end of the internship, the intern will: Develop an understanding of the Tribal Treasurer's role in financial oversight and Tribal governance. Gain practical experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data. Strengthen skills in identifying patterns, interpreting information, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. Develop an understanding of financial forecasting, risk assessment, and scenario analysis. Learn how financial and programmatic data can inform policies, procedures, and Tribal Council decision-making. Gain exposure to project management and its relationship to financial oversight. Strengthen professional communication, research, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Desired Qualifications Preferred areas of study may include: Data Analytics or Data Science Finance or Accounting Economics Mathematics or Statistics Physics or General Sciences Engineering Business Public Policy or Public Administration Business Law Pre-Law or Legal Studies Other related analytical or research-focused fields Students from other academic disciplines may also be considered if they demonstrate strong analytical, quantitative, research, or critical-thinking abilities. Confidentiality The intern may have access to sensitive financial, programmatic, demographic, governmental, or other confidential information. The intern must maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable Tribal policies, procedures, confidentiality requirements, and internship agreements. Mentor Responsibilities The Tribal Treasurer will provide mentorship and guidance throughout the internship, including opportunities for the intern to learn about financial oversight, data-informed decision-making, project management, and the Treasurer's role within Tribal government. The Treasurer may also provide the intern with opportunities to discuss or present research and analytical findings, receive feedback on assigned projects, and develop greater confidence in making evidence-based recommendations.
