This paid fellowship is designed for emerging leaders who want hands-on experience working with youth, developing programs, strengthening their leadership skills, and contributing directly to Umoja's work in schools and the community. Leadership Fellows are not simply observers. Fellows are expected to actively participate in programming, build relationships with students, support classroom activities, contribute their individual talents, and help create engaging experiences for young people. The fellowship also serves as a pathway into future employment with Umoja. Fellows who demonstrate strong attendance, professionalism, initiative, and effectiveness with students may be considered for a part-time position following successful completion of the fellowship.
Key Responsibilities Leadership Fellows will:
Support Umoja programming in middle and high school settings Build positive and consistent relationships with students Assist facilitators with classroom activities, discussions, projects, and events Lead or co-lead at least one activity, lesson, workshop, or skill-based experience for students Bring personal talents, interests, professional experience, or creative skills into programming Help maintain an engaging, respectful, and welcoming classroom environment Encourage students to participate and remain engaged Support special events, student showcases, field trips, and community programming when needed Assist with program preparation, setup, cleanup, and other operational needs Communicate professionally with Umoja staff, fellows, school partners, and students Participate in fellowship training, reflection, and professional development opportunities Demonstrate initiative by identifying ways to strengthen programming and student experiences Fellowship Expectations Fellows are expected to treat this opportunity as a professional commitment.
Fellows must:
Attend at least 10 of the 12 required fellowship sessions Arrive on time and prepared to participate Communicate absences or scheduling conflicts in advance Remain actively engaged during program time Refrain from personal phone use while working with students unless needed for an Umoja activity or emergency Model the professionalism and behavior expected from students Accept feedback and demonstrate a willingness to grow Maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality when working with youth Follow all Umoja and school-site policies What You Bring Strong candidates may have experience in education, youth development, leadership, arts, business, communications, athletics, technology, entrepreneurship, community engagement, or other areas. Fellows who successfully complete the program and demonstrate exceptional performance may be invited to apply for or be offered a paid part-time position with Umoja. Employment consideration will be based on factors including attendance, reliability, professionalism, initiative, ability to connect with students, teamwork, leadership, and overall program performance. Successful completion of the fellowship does not guarantee employment, but strong fellows will receive priority consideration for future opportunities within Umoja. Ideal Fellow The ideal Umoja Leadership Fellow is someone who does not need to know everything before starting, but is willing to show up, contribute, learn, and lead. We are looking for people who can answer the question: "What can you bring into a room of young people that helps them learn, grow, create, or see new possibilities for themselves?"
