The Community Justice Fellowship is designed to give new attorneys valuable legal training and the opportunity to gain practical experience in the areas of practice handled by Legal Aid Center. The purpose of the fellowship is not only to assist with the great unmet legal need at Legal Aid Center, but to expose the fellow to the workings of a public interest law practice. The fellow provides critical assistance to the thousands of low-income and vulnerable clients who are assisted by Legal Aid Center each year by rotating through Legal Aid Center's project areas and getting exposed to all areas of practice, from interviewing vulnerable clients to processing cases to final resolution. The Children's Attorneys Project , which represents thousands of abused and neglected children in the foster care system, gives clients a voice to ensure they are not separated from siblings and are timely reunited with parents or grandparents or adopted quicker so they are not traumatized by long stays in foster care. The Family Justice Project , which represents victims of domestic violence, provides clients with a vital lifeline to reclaim a life free from violence by obtaining protective orders, divorce decrees, and custody orders. If the victim is an immigrant, the fellow assists in obtaining immigration-related relief under the Violence Against Women Act or other victim-based relief. The Consumer Rights Project is dedicated to fighting for the rights of those who have been defrauded and victimized by unscrupulous businesses, debt collectors, loan sharks, and landlords. Our life-saving housing justice team ensures tenants understand and assert their legal rights, defends tenants against illegal evictions, addresses despicable habitability issues, and connects tenants to available rental assistance programs in the community. The Guardianship Advocacy Project represents all adults subject to guardianship to ensure the least restrictive alternative is selected to maximize independence, and legal rights; protects the due process rights of seniors and individuals with disabilities saddled with an inappropriate guardian; advocates for the wishes of seniors and individuals with disabilities in a guardianship action when they want to remain in their home; and stops guardians from unilaterally liquidating the property, keepsakes, and heirlooms of a person under a guardianship.
