Job Description

Colgate University invites applications for the Olive B. O'Connor Fellowship in Creative Writing. This year we invite applications for a one-year fellowship, renewable for a second year, in fiction. Writers who have recently completed an MFA, MA, or PhD in creative writing, and who need a year or two to complete their first book, are encouraged to apply. The selected writer will spend up to two academic years (late August 2027 to early May 2029) at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. The fellow will teach two multigenre introduction to creative writing courses in the first year; in the second year, if renewed, the fellow will teach three courses, possibly including an upper-level workshop in fiction. In the second year, the fellow will also give a public reading from their work in progress. The fellow may be asked to co-supervise one or more honors theses each year. They will also have the option to assist with the Colgate Writers Conference in early June of both years for additional compensation. Colgate is a vibrant and leading liberal arts university of 3200 students situated in central New York State. The Colgate faculty is committed to excellence in both teaching and scholarship. Salary Information The fellowship carries a stipend of $60,550 plus travel expenses; health and life insurance are provided. Colgate will not sponsor any visa or work authorization for this position. Application Materials and Deadline Complete applications, due by January 15, 2027, consist of a: cover letter; CV; three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should address the candidate's abilities as a teacher; and a prose writing sample (maximum of 30 double-spaced pages).
