Approximately 4 months (Mid-November through Mid-March) About the Opportunity. Driscoll's Subtropical Strawberry Breeding Program evaluates new strawberry genetics for commercial production in Florida during the winter growing season. We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Seasonal Research Assistant to support phenotypic data collection and breeding research activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading data collection efforts on one or two major research projects while also supporting additional phenotyping and post-harvest evaluations. This role offers hands-on experience in plant breeding, pathology, and agricultural research in both field and laboratory environments. Key Responsibilities Lead phenotypic data collection for one or two major breeding research projects. Collect and record plant, fruit, and disease-related phenotypic data following established protocols. Support plant pathology evaluations and other breeding program phenotyping activities. Assist with post-harvest assessments and laboratory-based research projects. Accurately enter and manage data using electronic data collection tools. Maintain high standards of food safety, laboratory safety, and scientific integrity. Work independently and collaboratively with breeding and supporting team members. Travel between

Research Sites:

The breeding program utilizes three field locations, each located approximately 10 minutes from the laboratory and office facilities. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is passionate about agriculture, plant breeding, plant pathology, genetics, or biological sciences and is eager to gain practical research experience. Candidates should be available to work from mid-November through mid-March and commit between 20 and 40 hours per week during the season.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to follow research protocols consistently and accurately. Comfort working outdoors in varying field conditions. Ability to work effectively in both field and laboratory settings. Strong communication and teamwork skills. A reliable work ethic and willingness to learn. Preferred Qualifications Educational background, coursework, or demonstrated interest in Agriculture, Plant Breeding, Genetics, Plant Pathology, Biology, or related disciplines. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Ability to travel independently between home, research fields, laboratory facilities, and cooler storage locations. Experience using Microsoft Excel and other data management tools. Experience with basic laboratory equipment and procedures, such as refractometers, centrifuges, firmness testing equipment (FirmTech), and mobile data collection applications. Prior experience is preferred but not required; training will be provided. Previous experience in agricultural research, field trials, greenhouse work, plant breeding, or laboratory environments is a plus. Working Conditions Combination of indoor laboratory work and outdoor field activities. Extended periods of standing, walking, and data collection in agricultural settings. Exposure to varying weather conditions typical of Florida's winter growing season. Frequent travel between nearby research plots and laboratory facilities.
