In the heart of the Duxbury headquarters lies a bleeding edge facility focused on producing the next generation of farmed shellfish. A fundamental part of the business, here technicians utilize ever-evolving techniques to maximize production capabilities and supply high quality, healthy seed to the ICSF farms and a long list of east coast shellfish growers. In order to continue increasing shellfish production, ICSF is looking to expand algae production with the hiring of an experienced algologist. The ideal candidate for this role is interested in having a significant and long term impact on algae production at the hatchery. ICSF is eager to have employees who are happy to take on the challenge of developing the hatchery to its fullest potential through novel ideas and continued research. This role is responsible for producing reliable, high-quality live algae at scale; maintaining a robust culture collection; and ensuring each shellfish production system receives the right feed, at the right concentration, every day. The Algologist will manage multiple Industrial Plankton photobioreactors (PBRs) at full production capacity and lead a small team of algae technicians. Positioned as a full-time, salaried opportunity, this role includes a comprehensive benefits package and involves reporting to the Hatchery Manager. Annual compensation, based on the candidate's experience and qualifications, is offered between $60,000 and $120,000.

ROLE:

Operate and optimize multiple Industrial Plankton PBRs to consistently meet hatchery demand at full capacity. Develop and issue daily algae feeding plans for all shellfish production systems, including larvae, settlement, post-set, broodstock, and other hatchery areas as applicable for various oyster, clam, and scallop species. Maintain a library of stock cultures including ordering new stock from labs, utilizing agar slants for preservation, and ensuring daily maintenance of early inoculants through rigorous aseptic technique and documentation. Monitor culture health, density, growth rates, water quality, contamination risk, and production performance; diagnose and resolve issues quickly. Schedule inoculations, harvests, reactor cleaning, maintenance, and culture scale-ups to maintain dependable production continuity. Lead, train, schedule, and support a team of algae technicians; establish clear daily priorities and consistent operating procedures. Maintain accurate records for culture performance, feed volumes, reactor operation, strain inventories, and incidents or corrective actions. Work closely with hatchery leadership and production teams to forecast demand and adjust algae production plans as shellfish needs change. Improve protocols, efficiency, quality control, and biosecurity across the algae rooms. Maintain a safe, clean, organized work environment and ensure equipment is operated according to established procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated experience producing microalgae in a commercial shellfish hatchery or comparable aquaculture production environment. Strong knowledge of microalgal culture techniques, including strain maintenance, scaling cultures, contamination control, harvesting, and feed preparation. Ability to interpret culture data and make sound, timely decisions under daily production demands. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and dependable, with strong recordkeeping habits. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on hatchery setting and collaborating across production teams. Strong ability to work independently and manage a team Flexibility of schedule including 8+ hour days, weekend shifts, and holiday coverage Valid driver's license and mode of transportation Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly Ability to bend down, stand, kneel or climb ladders for extended periods of time Work in all conditions including heat, humidity, cold, etc.

STRONG PREFERENCE

Commercial hatchery experience Direct experience operating Industrial Plankton Photo-bioreactors Management experience A degree in phycology, marine science, aquaculture, biology, or a related field is preferred; equivalent practical experience will be considered.
