Job Description

Yolo County Flood Control & Water Conservation District (District) is accepting applications for the position of Irrigation Operations Worker. The District is a special district located in Woodland, California, whose primary mission is to provide surface water for agricultural purposes in western Yolo County, and it serves approximately 225,000 acres of agricultural land. The District is instrumental to maintaining the economy and agricultural heritage of Yolo County. Under general supervision, persons in the Irrigation Operations Worker position are responsible for delivering water to District customers, taking water orders, performing maintenance on the canal system, and performing associated construction-type activities such as operating heavy equipment, building concrete forms, and pipe installation. Persons in this position must be able to accurately enter information on a computer or tablet. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience in agriculture, construction, irrigation, or a related field. A valid California drivers license is required, and possession of a Class A license is a plus. Additional desirable skills include welding and metal fabrication, knowledge of small engine and pump maintenance and repair, and basic carpentry skills. Weekend work is required during the irrigation season (typically late March through mid-October) when persons in this position work 10 days on, four days off. Work schedule is Monday through Friday during the maintenance season. Due to the ability to respond in a timely manner to emergency situations in the District's canal system, applicants who live within a 15-mile radius from the District office are given priority. Examples of Essential Functions and Other Duties Takes water orders from customers, enters delivery information into software program and ensures that water is delivered within the designated time frame. Shuts off water at delivery gate according to the water customers' orders. Monitors canal levels and water flows and makes adjustments as necessary. Performs maintenance and construction activities along the canals and water distribution system by cleaning trash racks, installing and removing seasonal check structures. Works on construction projects including building new gate and check structures, installing meters, sump pumps, and culverts. Forms, pours and finishes concrete. Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators. Repairs and maintains small engines and pumps, chainsaws and weedeaters.
Required Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of:
Basic mathematics and ability to perform basic calculations. Basic ability to use a computer or tablet and enter information accurately. Ability to read a map and navigate rural roads and access points. Safe and proper operation of basic hand and power tools. Safe towing practices and the ability to hook up and tow a trailer.
Ability to:
Learn the principals of hydraulics and water flow and the various types of water delivery gates. Enter information accurately into the water accounting database. Work outdoors in a variety of physical environments including sun, heat, cold, wet and perform occasional climbing. Ability to lift at least fifty pounds. Drive and walk on unpaved roads and surfaces. Manage time and complete tasks in a timely fashion and adhere to a given work schedule. Communicate in a professional manner with co-workers and water customers.
