Full Job Description SUMMARY:
Provide primary animal husbandry care for all animal exhibits within the MODS Living Collection.
QUALIFICATIONS
A four-year degree in animal husbandry, marine science or biology is required; equivalent experience may be substituted. A minimum of two years' experience working with a variety of animal species in a zoo or aquarium setting and Basic Open Water SCUBA certification required. The qualified individual should have experience with daily care and maintenance of live animal exhibits, including but not limited to marine and freshwater aquariums, terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial and aquatic reptiles, amphibians and small mammals. Experience with otters, reptiles, small mammals, living coral systems and avian species are a plus. Must be able to work in a variety of climates. Must be able to work in high places and lift at least 50 lbs. This position includes weekends and holiday work. The qualified individual must be able to function as a team member and exhibit strong leadership and organizational skills. Must have a valid drivers' license. Wage starts at $19/hr.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintain exhibit animal enclosures, outreach animal enclosures, outdoor enclosure facilities, and the entire otter habitat. 2. Maintain accurate records of designated systems and specimens within those systems. 3. Prepare animal diets and supply food and fresh water to animals daily. 4. Responsible for daily creation and implementation of animal enrichment. 5. Administers medical needs to designated specimens as assigned by Sr. Director of Life Sciences or their designee. 6. Submits lists of new specimens or proposed acquisition of specimens for review and approval by the Sr. Director of Life Sciences or their designee. 7. Clean animal support areas and office areas daily. 8. Assists in Life Sciences public programs development based on knowledge and experience. 9. Performs dive tending and maintenance as needed. 10. Responsible for the care and maintenance of the terrestrial area and plants in the otter exhibit. 11. Assists with other duties as assigned and qualified.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a professional museum environment. Will work with a variety of animals. Will need a working knowledge of (or ability to learn) animal databases (CHARKS, TRACKS) to track animal observations, medications, water quality and inventories.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This job operates in a fast-paced, informal educational museum setting. Must be able to perform the following physical behaviors repetitively throughout a shift: standing, walking, handling, reaching horizontally, grasping firmly, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the waist, pushing buttons, bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, crouching, kneeling, pushing, sitting on the floor and carrying items upstairs. Must be able to work in high spaces 30' and higher, and work in awkward positions: prone, supine, etc. with ability to work 8 hours a day at a bench or moving from area to area as the situation demands. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Position may include indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time hourly position, 40 hours per week, with benefits starting after probation period. Overtime is available with the approval of the Sr. Director of Life Sciences. Scheduled days may vary and hours of work are typically 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May be required to work additional hours/weekends/holidays and special events.
TRAVEL:
May be required to drive MODS vehicle / own vehicle for outreaches or to pick up supplies.
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a valid class E driver license. Basic Open Water SCUBA Certification required.
