Job Description

The Summer Herpetology Lab Coordinator, in conjunction with the Herpetology Lab Director, is responsibly for overseeing the daily operations of BGSU's herpetology laboratory, which house a diverse collection of reptiles and amphibians. This role involves direct animal care and requires maintenance of high standards of husbandry, safety, and organization and may require oversight of lab assistants. The coordinator will ensure all animals are maintained in optimal health and that lab activities run smoothly throughout the summer term. Follow instructions, meet deadlines, and deliver quality work. Perform daily feeding, care, and husbandry of a variety of reptiles and amphibians Maintain and clean enclosures, ensuring proper environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, lighting) Monitor animal health and behavior; report concerns promptly to the Director Oversee and train student assistants or volunteers in proper animal care techniques Maintain accurate records of feeding schedules, health observations, and environmental conditions Coordinate supply inventory, including food, bedding, and equipment Ensure compliance with institutional animal care protocols and safety guidelines Assist with lab organization, research support, or educational activities as needed At least 2 years of hands-on experience working with herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) in a laboratory, zoological, or research setting Demonstrated knowledge of reptile and amphibian husbandry, including enclosure setup, temperature and humidity regulation, and dietary needs Ability to safely handle a variety of reptile and amphibian species Strong organizational and time-management skills Ability to work independently and supervise others Comfortable working in environments with live animals, feeder insects, and rodents Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in progress in biology, zoology, wildlife science, or a related field Experience training or supervising students or volunteers Familiarity with record-keeping systems for animal care and research Basic knowledge of animal health assessment and recognizing signs of illness or stress
