Job Description
The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Service & Repair Mechanics perform skilled mechanical work within a vehicle maintenance center for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative fuel self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor-driven equipment, and may perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction, and other equipment in the field. The Service & Repair Mechanic would diagnose and correct the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation. This position would overhaul, adjust, and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, and differentials; ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, and hydraulic systems; steering, wheel, and suspension mechanisms; body, cab, and frame components. Will be required to conduct NYS inspections. May be assigned to overhaul, repair, and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air, and hydraulic), small engines, mowers, and a variety of other equipment, including but not limited to off-road vehicles, watercraft, tractors, trailers, etc. May be required to diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air conditioning. May be required to do metal cutting, welding, brazing, and fabrication. Will be required to schedule service and repair appointments, make road calls, test drive equipment, complete reports, use parts catalogs, purchase parts, order, receive, and maintain inventory supplies for vehicle equipment maintenance and repairs. The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.-Must become a certified motor vehicle inspector group 1 & 2 within 6 months of appointment.- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience. Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 11/30/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response.
Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds.
