In this role, you will work with a team of dynamic and diverse individuals and ensure that equipment is installed correctly, properly maintained and repaired as needed across UB's North and South campuses. All the Student Life trades, and custodial staff work within UB's residential halls and apartments. As a Service and Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R), your contributions will ensure that equipment and systems are installed correctly, properly maintained, and repaired as needed. Responsibilities include: Supervising and training designated staff as applicable. Troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and replacing compressors, pumps, and electric motors. Troubleshooting, diagnosing, adjusting, and replacing parts & controls to include Building Management Systems. Installing and maintaining equipment. Operating and performing repairs to refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment. Inspecting and troubleshooting equipment for leaks and electrical/mechanical failures. Due to the nature of the work, the incumbent must hold the discipline, motivation, and knowledge to successfully complete tasks independently with little to no supervision Professionalism is important as the incumbent may serve as a supervisor to designated staff; the incumbent will also encounter students, staff, and visitors throughout the workday; representing Residential Facilities in a positive manner is essential. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate skills at a high level that are appropriate for the trade/position. Minimum Qualifications One or more of the following: Successful completion of a NYS two-year Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R) Traineeship or NYS two-year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent refrigeration two-year training or apprenticeship program;
  • OR four (4) years of full-time experience in the mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey-level mechanic or electrician which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program, one (1) year of which must include both training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial type refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment.
Apprenticeship training in the mechanical or electrical trades or training gained by completion of technical courses in the mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work.
Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training. When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a college or university residential setting. The ability to respond to after-hours service calls. Prodig+ No Executive Position No Physical Demands Frequently moves machinery and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across campus. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside tight spaces to access file machinery. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50 percent of the time. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service equipment. Driving Requirements This position drives a university owned vehicle, non-CDL Salary Range $50,425 Additional Salary Information Work Days Weekdays
