BASIC FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of the Senate Chair or Vice-Chair of the Legislative Women's Caucus (LWC) and the Senator's Chief of Staff, the LWC Consultant assists in developing Caucus' legislative events and community-building activities. In consultation with the Chair, Vice-Chair, and members of the Caucus, the Consultant will also work to assist in identifying and developing the LWC priority legislation and budget proposals and help guide their successful passage. This includes drafting analyses, presenting policy rationale to the Chair and other members of the Caucus, contribute to Caucus reports, and prepare speaking points for the Chair or Vice-Chair. The Consultant is expected to work closely, communicate and coordinate LWC legislative activities with the LWC Principal Consultant and staff in the Assembly.

DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Senator and the Chief of Staff, the Consultant provides policy consultation in key areas of interest for the Caucus Chair and members of the Caucus. Liaise with legislative community members and stakeholders as well as appointed members and staff of the Governor's administration to facilitate the goals of the

LWC. DESIRABLE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Candidates must have the ability to independently manage a substantial workload under strict deadlines (requiring working nights and weekends as necessary); analyze complex legislative proposals and succinctly communicate the policy and fiscal implications, both orally and in writing; demonstrate initiative and creativity in developing recommendations to improve proposals and advance and advocate for legislative proposals; develop strong programmatic expertise in relevant policy areas; exhibit maturity and professionalism.

ABILITY TO

The ideal candidate will be able to staff the LWC chair and build a strong network with LWC members and their staff and liaise with influencers and national leaders on women's issues, and perform administrative and policy-influencing functions effectively. The ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with Members, stakeholders, and staff is essential.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required. Graduate degree in relevant discipline preferred. At least three (3) years relevant experience is required. Candidates must also have experience and knowledge of the legislative and committee process, the ability to maintain a high level of analytical proficiency, and/or the ability to develop strong programmatic expertise. The ability to foster positive working relationships in a team environment is essential.

LOCATION, SALARY AND FILING DATE

This position is located in Sacramento, CA and requires in person attendance . The Senate's core business hours are 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and may require after hours or weekend work. Final salary will be commensurate with experience and education. Seniority and significant experience are required to reach the higher end of the salary range. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
