//innovation.ca.gov/ . The California Office of Data and Innovation (ODI) is seeking to hire a student assistant to work u nder the direction of the Head of Legislative and External Affairs. The student assistant will provide analytical, administrative, and coordination support for ODI's legislative and external affairs functions. This position supports research, stakeholder engagement, policy analysis, and internal coordination to help advance ODI's mission of delivering better government services through technology and design. The student assistant will ensure a smooth day-to-day operations, prepares high-quality materials for leadership, and supports engagement with legislative offices, industry partners, and other external stakeholders. This po sition is scheduled to begin in October 1, 2026. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. 00 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Strong research and writing skills. Interest in digital government, technology policy, or public sector innovation. Foundational knowledge of the California legislative process or public policy. Experience supporting stakeholder engagement or public-facing initiatives. Preferred Qualifications Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Please note that prior to appointment, individuals claiming preference under one of these categories will be required to furnish documentation establishing their eligibility. Preference for candidates with advanced undergraduate standing (entering their senior year) or enrollment in a master's or doctoral program. Duties and Responsibilities Manage scheduling and logistics for internal and external meetings, including coordinating across state agencies, legislative offices, and stakeholders. Prepare meeting agendas, background materials, briefing packets, and follow-up summaries to ensure leadership is well prepared. Draft professional correspondence, emails, memos, and routine communications on behalf of the Head of Legislative and External Affairs. Track action items, deadlines, and commitments to ensure timely follow-through and alignment with strategic priorities. Maintain organized digital filing systems and tracking tools for legislative, stakeholder, and policy documents. Assist with preparation of reports, presentations, dashboards, and executive briefings. Coordinate travel, procurement, and administrative processes related to legislative and external engagement activities. Support development of templates, standard operating procedures, and workflow improvements to strengthen team efficiency. Maintain and update stakeholder contact lists and engagement trackers. Conduct background research on industry groups, trade associations, advocacy organizations, and public sector partners. Coordinate logistics for stakeholder meetings, roundtables, innovation forums, and industry engagement activities. Prepare stakeholder briefing materials, meeting summaries, and follow-up communications. Monitor external publications, policy trends, and relevant news. Assist in drafting outreach materials such as invitations, fact sheets, FAQs, and event summaries. Support responses to external information requests in coordination with leadership and program teams. Support the tracking of state legislation and policy developments impacting ODI. Draft bill summaries, issue briefs, and background research to support leadership decision-making. Monitor legislative hearings and committee agendas for relevant policy. Maintain internal bill tracking systems and assist with preparing legislative reports and status updates. Support preparation of briefing materials, talking points, and informational documents for meetings with legislative staff. Coordinate internal review processes to gather input from program teams on legislative matters. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work i s performed in a hybrid environment. In office 2 days a week as schedules allow. The ODI Office is located at 401 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
