Land Use Technician - Planning, Building & Zoning Town of Preston, Connecticut | Land Use Department | Full-Time, Monday-Friday Are you highly organized, detail-oriented, and committed to serving the public with professionalism and care? The Town of Preston is seeking a dependable Land Use Technician to provide essential administrative, technical, and customer service support for the Planning, Building, and Zoning functions of the Land Use Department. This dynamic position serves as a central point of contact for residents, contractors, developers, board and commission members, and Town staff. The successful candidate will help guide applicants through permit and application processes, prepare meeting materials, maintain accurate records, support public hearings and legal notices, process fees and related financial records, and use office technology—including permit tracking systems and mapping tools—to keep the department running smoothly. Training will be provided.
What You'll Do:
Assist the public with land use, zoning, wetlands, building, and related permit questions and applications. Prepare agendas, packets, notices, correspondence, reports, and official records for boards and commissions. Track permits, applications, fees, bonds, invoices, deposits, and other departmental records with accuracy and confidentiality. Coordinate with Town departments, consultants, regional and state agencies, and the public to support efficient land use operations. Maintain website information, records, forms, regulations, and mapping-related materials as directed.
The Ideal Candidate Will Bring:
Three to four years of administrative and customer service experience in a busy professional setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Appropriate experience includes municipal, real estate, banking, land use, developer and legal offices. Strong computer skills, attention to detail, organization, accuracy, and the ability to learn municipal permitting, land use, and records systems. Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, proofreading, recordkeeping, and customer service skills. Professional judgment, discretion, confidentiality, and the ability to work independently while supporting a team-oriented municipal office.
