Position Description:

This intern will assist Project Development Planning staff in the implementation of a transportation planning program to assist a small South Dakota community (under 2,000 population) with the development of a multimodal community transportation plan, including bike, pedestrian, transit, and traditional modes. The position will consist of both office work (including policy research, GIS, planning, and report generation) and work on site with the community (including site analysis, data gathering, and public and stakeholder meetings). Some overnight travel will be required and typically works five 8 hour days each week. Preference will be given to students majoring in community or transportation planning, landscape architecture, or civil engineering. The preferred intern will have completed coursework in community or transportation planning and multimodal transportation design studies. Preference will be given to students with GIS mapping capabilities.

Qualifications:

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program. All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
