Job Description Overview The Harbert College of Business seeks candidates for an Academic Advisor. This position will advise a large student population on course matriculation plans, academic action, problem resolution, opportunities for professional engagement and networking, and will empower students to achieve professional, personal, and academic goals. This position demonstrates proficient and comprehensive knowledge of all Business undergraduate programs, university policies, and advising applications/platforms. Additionally, this position will develop and oversee advising functions, apply specialized knowledge, and may serve as a mentor to other advisors, peer advisors, and support staff. The selected candidates will serve the Business Advising Office as part of a dynamic team of advisors. This position is also responsible for preparing and giving presentations to students, parents, and other constituents regarding academic requirements and expectations. As such, a high degree of professionalism and interpersonal skills, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills are expected. A desire to work as part of a team dynamic and contribute to a positive environment is also required. Responsibilities Essential functions include but are not limited to: Advising students in all matters related to academic and/or curriculum matters; Interpreting University policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, and staff. Clearing students for graduation and certifying minors. Working with campus partners and advising colleagues to provide essential advising information. Assisting with and coordinating registration procedures. Advising for student cohort(s). Conducting Camp War Eagle (new student orientation) and S.O.S. (transfer student orientation) academic evaluations and advising. Evaluating and maintaining student records; and developing students' self-awareness through analytical and creative thinking. The successful candidate will be expected to exhibit progress in his/her own professional development. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Level I:
Bachelor's degree - no specific discipline.
Level II:
Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience with primary focus of student-related advising or academic counseling. OR A Master's degree with 2 years of experience of student-related advising or academic counseling.
Level III:
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience with primary focus of student-related advising or academic counseling. OR A Master's degree with 4 years of experience of student-related advising or academic counseling. For positions that require the employee to teach, a Master's degree will be required.
Desired qualifications:
Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures in advising or counseling, and demonstrated commitment to and record of working with underrepresented students. Experience advising students in an education setting, preferably with a large student population. Experience in Banner, Kronos, Advise Assist, DegreeWorks or other student/client platforms/CRM.
