Oakland International Academy We are looking for a full-time School Guidance Counselor to serve our High School at Oakland International Academy! Job Summary Responsible for guiding and advocating for students in the domains of Academic Development, Personal/Social Development, and Career Development. Further, the counselor must be committed to distributed leadership, actively participate in a professional learning community and embrace families and the community to achieve a common outcome for the student achievement in a school. Candidate should possess strong interpersonal and (oral/written) communication; be detailed oriented, independent and flexible; as well as have patience and empathy for adolescents and their families. Job Specifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Evaluating students' abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual planning
  • Identifying issues that affect school performance, such as poor classroom attendance rates
  • Helping students understand and overcome social or behavioral problems through classroom guidance lessons and counseling
  • Counseling individuals and small groups on the basis of student and school needs
  • Working with students to develop skills, such as organizational and time management abilities and effective study habits
  • Helping students create a plan to achieve academic and career goals
  • Collaborating with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students succeed
  • Teaching students and school staff about specific topics, such as bullying, drug abuse, and planning for college or careers after graduation
  • Maintaining records as required
  • Reporting possible cases of neglect or abuse and referring students and parents to resources outside the school for additional support Other Duties
  • Keeps abreast of developments and research in the field of school social work and shares with colleagues.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required) Must possess a Master's degree or higher in School Counseling. Must hold a current, valid Michigan School Counselor License (SCL), or an NT endorsement in school counseling. Minimum of 1-2 years working in an urban high school setting is strongly preferred.
