Job Description
Location Wilson, NC Description The Upper School and College Counselor provides strategic leadership and oversight for programs and services that support the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success of 9-12th grade students. Working collaboratively with faculty, administrators, families, and outside professionals, the Counselor ensures that students receive appropriate support to thrive in a challenging college-preparatory environment. The Counselor coordinates intervention strategies and monitors student progress.
The position also serves as a resource to teachers by promoting best practices in supporting students with special academic or socioemotional needs and by providing SEL support in 9-12 grades.
The Counselor works individually or in group settings with students to provide short term responsive services and to refer to local mental health providers for more intensive mental health services when warranted. As part of the Crisis Management Team, the Counselor ensures that the socioemotional needs of students are addressed when a traumatic or distressing event has occurred. Through proactive communication and collaborative problem-solving, the Upper School and College Counselor helps advance Greenfield School's mission of educating the whole child and supporting each student's individual potential. This is a full-time, 11-month position. Responsibilities of the Upper School and College Counselor include, but are not limited to: Upper School Assist Upper School Coordinator, Dean of Students and College Counselor with course registration Provide transition support for students entering upper school and students new to the school. Teach freshman College Awareness class and senior College Preparatory class Provide short-term counseling for students and parents as needed. Provide written communication with the parent/teachers/administration regarding skills addressed and interventions implemented. Refer students/families to external resources for counseling, medication evaluation and psycho-educational testing. Facilitate student and family treatment team and planning meetings with parents, teachers, administration and counselor as academic, behavioral or other concerns arise. Provide crisis intervention support to teacher, and/or assistant head of school with student. Provide support to classrooms that are struggling with complex and/or concerning group dynamic issues. Advise admissions office on any special circumstances where students have a pre existing IEP/504 plan or additional needs that warrant a referral. Write grant proposal for funding through the ABC Board. Coordinate with community resources to provide a wellness day that provides education on alcohol and substance abuse prevention issues, as well as overall wellness Provide training as needed to parents, faculty and staff on various mental health and substance abuse topics as the needs arise College Counseling Provide 1:1 and group college counseling to all Upper School students with regular contact throughout upper school. Meet with all students/families annually to identify students' goals and plan for the college admissions process Provide guidance on course registration and class selection in alignment with student goals Facilitate parent/student workshops on the college admissions and selections process for each 9-12 grade level annually to help students/families to identify student goals and a clear plan for the college application process and to identify summer program or volunteer activities that would be beneficial to the student. Welcome college admission representatives to Greenfield campus to meet with students. Provide college boot camp in the summer prior to senior year to address student's "Top Ten List," Main Essay of choice, as well as overview of the Scoir program. Coordinate and oversee all users and entries in the Scoir program as the SuperUser. Provide support to students throughout the application process by being available to meet as well as edit/proof all documentation prior to submission. Coordinate with the learning center director to insure that College Board and ACT accommodation requests are submitted in a timely manner Provide midyear reports for seniors as well as final reports to their college of choice. Oversee the registrar and transcripts for all upper school students. Teach freshman college awareness class and senior college preparatory class Requirements Master's degree and certification in School Counseling, or certification eligible Minimum 3 years of experience in a K-12 school, clinical mental health setting or related setting Current licensure as Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMSC) or a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) preferred but not required
