An Academic or Guidance Counselor provides guidance to students in elementary, middle and high schools to help them succeed academically and socially. Works with school teachers and administrators to address problems that affect student performance, and identifies resources for students and families. Helps high school students to plan academic course work and advises on the college search and application process.
The School Counselor provides comprehensive post-secondary planning services and social-emotional supports to high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Learning Disabilities. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the counselor supports students in developing their career goals and the self-advocacy skills necessary for success in school, postsecondary education, employment, and independent living. The School Counselor collaborates with students, families, teachers, related service providers, and community agencies to provide individualized support that promotes student growth and a successful transition beyond high school. Essential Responsibilities Post-secondary & Transition Planning Develop, implement, and monitor transition-related IEP goals. Coordinate transition planning beginning at age 14 in accordance with IDEA. Assist students in identifying career interests, strengths, and vocational goals. Facilitate career exploration activities and administer career interest assessments. Support students with college searches, college applications, essays, financial aid resources, scholarships, and accommodations for higher education. Assist students pursuing vocational training, employment, apprenticeships, or other postsecondary pathways. Collaborate with community agencies, vocational programs, colleges, and employers to support successful transitions. School Counseling Provide individual and small-group counseling to address students' social, emotional, behavioral, and academic needs. Support students in developing coping skills, self-regulation, problem-solving abilities, and self-advocacy. Assist students with peer relationships, conflict resolution, stress management, and emotional wellness. Collaborate with school staff to foster a positive, supportive school climate. Collaboration Maintain ongoing communication with families regarding student progress and postsecondary planning. Coordinate with related service providers and outside agencies to ensure continuity of services. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and professional development activities. Additional Responsibilities Maintain accurate student records and documentation. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding transition services. Assist with crisis intervention and student support as needed. Participate in school-wide initiatives that promote student success and well-being. Qualifications Master's degree in School Counseling. Valid New Jersey School Counselor Certification. Knowledge of
IDEA, IEP
development, and transition planning requirements. Experience working with adolescents. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Experience working with students with ASD, ADHD, learning disabilities, and executive functioning challenges. Knowledge of transition assessments and vocational planning.
