Job Description

Mission and Background The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates, NY is a Catholic college preparatory school for young women sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, NY, and rooted in their charism of unity, reconciliation and inclusive love that embraces all of creation. College Counselor The College Counselor guides students and families through all aspects of the college search, application, and enrollment process. This role supports students in identifying colleges that align with their academic, personal, and career goals, while also managing school-wide college readiness initiatives and maintaining relationships with college admissions representatives. Key Responsibilities Individual Counseling and Student Support Provide personalized college counseling to juniors and seniors, and introductory college planning to underclassmen. Guide students in building balanced college lists, writing essays, completing applications, and meeting deadlines. Assist with financial aid applications, scholarships, and college decision-making. Program Development and Coordination Plan and execute college-related programming, such as college nights, workshops, essay boot camps, and financial aid seminars. Develop and deliver college readiness curricula or activities in advisory periods or classroom settings. Organize and host visits from college representatives. Communication and Documentation Write comprehensive school counselor letters of recommendation. Maintain up-to-date records of student college applications, decisions, and matriculation. Communicate regularly with students, parents, and faculty about the college process. Submit transcripts and required documents via platforms such as Naviance or Common App. School Collaboration and Representation Collaborate with academic departments and teachers to align student preparation with college expectations. Partner with the athletic department for students pursuing college athletics. Represent the school to colleges and universities, attending conferences (e.g., NACAC, College Board, ACCIS) and counselor fly-in programs.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, or a related field. Minimum 3 years of experience in college counseling or college admissions. Deep knowledge of college admissions trends, financial aid, and standardized testing. Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred:
Master's degree in School Counseling, Higher Education, or a related field. Familiarity with college counseling software (e.g., Naviance). Experience in an independent, private, or faith-based school setting. Knowledge of NCAA eligibility and processes for student-athletes.
Work Environment:
Office and school environment; may require occasional evening and weekend work for events. Some travel required for conferences and college visits.
