General Academic is Houston's premier K12 tutoring, test prep, and publishing company based in the Rice Village. Founded out of a Rice University dorm room in 2003, nearly 2,000 students currently visit our 9,000 square foot office every academic year. We are seeking an experienced college admissions counselor to lead the first stage of our work with new students and families on an hourly basis. You will help students clarify their goals, discover promising essay ideas, and build a practical plan for moving their applications forward. Responsibilities and Daily Tasks Lead initial meetings with students and parents to understand their goals, academic background, college interests, existing support, and immediate priorities. Review intake materials, college lists, activities, resumes, and essay drafts before meetings so the conversation begins from the student's actual starting point. Facilitate focused conversations that uncover the experiences, interests, decisions, and perspectives that can give an application depth and direction. Help students develop personal-statement topics and early drafts. Identify the central idea, strengthen structure, ask for useful detail, and give specific feedback the student can act on. Use follow-up sessions to develop the student's new work, address obstacles, and establish the next priorities. Adapt the process for students who need more exploration or arrive with substantial work already completed. Provide college-planning guidance appropriate to the student's stage, including college fit, application components, timelines, and academic or extracurricular priorities for younger students. Communicate clearly with parents, keep meetings productive, and leave students with manageable assignments and an understanding of what comes next.- Ideally, continue supporting students beyond onboarding with essay development, application planning, and progress toward their application goals. Keep concise session notes that capture the student's direction, current materials, progress, open questions, and next steps. When a student transitions to another counselor, prepare a clear handoff so that counselor can build on the work.
