Exempt Job Summary The elementary school counselor is responsible for helping students understand their abilities, aptitudes, and interests in light of the opportunities and demands they encounter now or may face in the future. Essential Duties In order to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Counsels students in need of learning, physical, social, and emotional support through conferences held with students based on teacher, parent, principal, or self-referral. Works closely with classroom teachers in planning and implementing guidance sessions based on the developmental needs of all students. Consults with the classroom teacher, school principal, visiting teacher, school nurse, psychologist, and parents, regarding students and their problems. Provides planned occupational information programs for the purpose of introducing the student to the world of work. Maintains accurate and up-to-date permanent record folders. Coordinates and directs the standardized testing program in the school, and interprets test results to teachers, parents, and students. Enrolls and orients all new students to the school. Acts as the liaison between the school and community agencies in working on student challenges. Serves as a member of the Child Study Team and identifies, screens, and refers exceptional and/or at-risk students for evaluation and placement. Coordinates the efforts of all specialists working on a student case. Participates in and contributes to professional school counseling organizations. Attends workshops and conferences to keep abreast of current school counseling practices.

The nature and scope of the school counseling services as outlined above. The functioning of school counseling as an integral part of the total educational program. The effectiveness of school counseling services. Performs other duties as assigned by the school principal. Minimum Qualifications Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field. Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with an appropriate endorsement as a school counselor. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements The individual must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak clearly in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; lift up to 25 pounds; and bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
