Recovery Specialist -

Position Overview:
The Recovery Specialist provides non-clinical, peer-based support to individuals with substance use disorder referred by Newton Medical Center, local law enforcement, or self-referral. Based in our Newton office, this role includes frequent travel to Newton Medical Center to engage patients in the Emergency Department, followed by ongoing outreach and support in the community. This position operates on a four-day workweek with extended daily hours. This role bridges challenging moments and long-term recovery by offering encouragement, guidance, and practical support. Through consistent engagement, the Recovery Specialist helps individuals begin and sustain their recovery journey.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years of continuous personal recovery, demonstrating stability and understanding of the recovery process.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must meet all requirements to volunteer/work within Atlantic Health System/Newton Medical Center.
  • Must have, or be willing to obtain, NJ Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) credential.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to manage responsibilities across multiple settings, including office and hospital environments.
  • Must possess a valid NJ driver's license in good standing, maintain a safe driving record, carry adequate automobile insurance, and have reliable transportation.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Bilingual, English/Spanish skills are a plus.
Responsibilities:
  • Respond to referrals from Atlantic Health System/Newton Medical Center and local municipal police departments throughout Sussex County, providing timely, in-person support.
  • Provide assistance to walk-in individuals seeking services.
  • Conduct follow-up outreach (phone and/or in person) to support continued engagement.
  • Help develop individualized Recovery Management Plans (goals, strengths, barriers).
  • Provide ongoing peer support aligned with each individual's recovery pathway.
  • Work closely with Patient Navigator to coordinate care with Newton Medical Center staff and community partners.
  • Model recovery through appropriate sharing of lived experience.
  • Maintain accurate documentation per agency and grant requirements.
  • Participate in team meetings and supervision.
  • Perform other duties as necessary or assigned.
Position Details:
This is a full-time, 40-hour per-week position with a four-day workweek featuring extended daily hours. Flexibility to work occasionally evenings and weekends as needed.
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Annual salary: $43,000 - $48,000, commensurate with experience.
