Job Description

DESCRIPTION
Tusculum University is seeking qualified applicants for an Upward Bound Math and Science Academic Advisor serving 9th-12th grade students in Greene County and Greeneville City Schools. This 12-month, full-time position reports to the Director of Upward Bound Math and Science and requires periodic evening and weekend work. The Academic Advisor provides STEM-based educational and career guidance to high school students as part of the university's Upward Bound Math and Science program which is designed to ensure high school completion and enrollment in a STEM-based collegiate program-of-study. Duties include identifying, recruiting, and selecting participants; collecting and maintaining data; conducting small group sessions; designing and leading STEM-themed program activities (some activities require physical exertion); and collaboration with school personnel and parents. The Upward Bound Math and Science Academic Advisor must have a commitment to the philosophy and goals of the program and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, preferably in a STEM field (master's degree preferred) and 2 years' work experience in TRIO Programs, education, social or behavioral sciences, a STEM field, student personnel, or related discipline; candidates must have knowledge and experience working with disadvantaged students and a commitment to the philosophy and goals of the program.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. The employee will be required to work irregular hours including nights and weekends; Able to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion; Communicate effectively; Must be able to walk distances, sit or stand for long periods of time, and climb stairs. Ability to talk and hear; Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel from the campus to target-area schools and school district offices.
