Position Summary The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPS/RSPS) utilizes their lived experience with mental health recovery and/or substance use recovery to inspire hope, foster resilience, and support individuals in achieving their personal recovery goals. Working as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team, the Peer Support Specialist provides recovery-oriented services that promote wellness, self-determination, community integration, independent living, and long-term recovery. This position serves individuals receiving outpatient behavioral health, intensive outpatient (IOP), case management, recovery support, and supportive housing services. The Peer Support Specialist assists clients in developing recovery skills, accessing community resources, building healthy relationships, improving daily living skills, and maintaining recovery through peer mentoring and advocacy. Essential Job Duties Recovery Coaching Provide one-on-one peer support services utilizing lived recovery experience. Assist individuals in developing individualized recovery goals. Promote hope, empowerment, and self-advocacy. Share personal recovery experiences appropriately to encourage engagement and motivation. Model healthy recovery behaviors and wellness practices. Recovery Planning Collaborate with clinical staff in developing individualized recovery plans. Assist clients in identifying personal strengths and recovery goals. Support progress toward treatment and recovery objectives. Reinforce clinical interventions between counseling sessions. Group Facilitation Facilitate peer-led recovery groups. Conduct life skills groups. Facilitate relapse prevention discussions. Lead wellness and recovery education sessions. Assist with recovery-oriented community activities. Community Integration Connect clients with community resources. Assist with employment readiness. Support educational and vocational goals. Promote participation in mutual support meetings. Encourage healthy recreational and social activities. Assist clients with transportation coordination when appropriate. Supportive Housing Services Provide recovery support within supportive housing programs. Assist residents with daily living skills. Promote healthy household routines. Encourage conflict resolution and positive peer relationships. Support successful transition to independent living. Care Coordination Collaborate with counselors, case managers, medical providers, and psychiatric providers. Participate in treatment team meetings. Assist with referrals and linkage to outside providers. Coordinate recovery supports across service providers. Crisis Support Recognize behavioral health crises. Utilize de-escalation techniques. Notify licensed clinical staff when higher-level intervention is necessary. Support clients through crisis stabilization while remaining within scope of practice. Documentation Complete accurate and timely documentation. Document all billable Medicaid services in accordance with Texas Medicaid standards. Maintain progress notes within required timeframes. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2. Complete required incident reports. Client Advocacy Advocate for client rights. Promote person-centered care. Encourage client participation in treatment decisions. Assist clients in navigating healthcare, housing, employment, legal, and community systems. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Active Texas Certification Board (TCB) certification as: Certified Peer Specialist (CPS), and/or Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS). Must maintain certification in good standing. Personal lived experience in recovery consistent with certification requirements. Valid Texas Driver License. Reliable transportation. Current automobile insurance. Ability to pass criminal background screening. Ability to pass required Medicaid exclusion screenings. Preferred Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Health, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or related field. One year of peer support experience. Experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Experience in outpatient behavioral health or supportive housing. Knowledge of ASAM Criteria.
