Universal Workers may be called upon to help tenants in and out of bed, dressing, grooming, assistance in personal hygiene, including assistance in going to the bathroom, feeding, giving baths, providing meal service, general housekeeping and laundry services. Universal Workers will be called upon to provide basic treatments as required and directed by the Program Director. Universal Workers are responsible for observing and reporting changes in tenants' physical and emotional conditions to the Program Director. Excellent communication and team skills are needed. General clean-up of program and tenant areas as needed or required.

Qualifications Education:

High School graduate or GED is preferred. All applicants must be at least 16 years old. A 16 hour nurse aide course must be successfully completed before direct tenant services. Universal Workers must be able to read, write and follow written and verbal instructions.

Continuing Education Requirements:

All nursing assistants are required to the program in-service training programs. Failure to complete the in-service training programs, or any other requirement under local, state or federal law, may result in termination.

Work Experience:

Previous health-related experience preferred, but not required. On the job training is provided. Duties and Responsibilities The following is a list of duties and responsibilities for Universal Workers. All of the job duties are considered essential unless otherwise noted: Bathe or assist tenants in bathing (bed bath, tub, shower or whirlpool and shampoo, as well as reporting skin conditions to Program Director. Perform or assist tenants with personal grooming needs; shaving, hair care, nail care, oral hygiene, denture care, skin care, toileting and cosmetics as determined by the individualized service plan. Assist tenants in dressing and undressing as needed in clothing appropriate to the time of day and season of the year as determined by the individualized service plan. Assist tenant in caring for and securing (non-loss) of personal articles, labeling clothing, etc... as determined by the individualized service plan. Change bed linen as determined by the individualized service plan. Assist tenants with, before, and after meal routine; wash hands, face, transport to and from dining area, prepare bedside environment for in-room dining as determined by the individualized service plan. Provide prompt meal time assistance; have understanding of diets ordered, position tray for tenant convenience, help with cutting foods, buttering bread, pouring liquids, etc..as determined by the individualized service plan. Provide partial feeding assistance and encouragement as needed as determined by the individualized service plan. Report appetite changes and request substitutions when necessary. Record food on meal intake record. Assist tenants with temporary elimination needs; bedpan, urinal, bathroom assistance, etc., as determined by the individualized service plan. Perform perineal care after each episode of incontinence, and apply incontinence barrier if indicated as determined by the individualized service plan. Record bowel habits and urine outputs as directed or as determined by the individualized service plan... Collect specimens as directed or as determined by the individualized service plan... Assist tenant in transferring from bed, chair, wheelchair, toilet, etc., using appropriate equipment and following principles of body mechanics; determine number of persons for assist; use gait belt, mechanical lift, grab bar, etc. as determined by the individualized service plan.. Assist tenants in exercise; active/passive range of motion, ambulation, etc. as indicated by supervisor and individual service plan as well as assist tenants to activities as necessary. Ability to reasonably conform to all rules and policies of this program. Universal Worker documentation as required per program. Answer emergency notification system within reasonable period of time. This is NOT an all inclusive list of duties and responsibilities for the Universal Workers. Other duties as assigned by the Program Director/Administrator. Physical Activity Requirements Lift Requirement Universal Workers will frequently be called upon to lift various items between 10 and 50 pounds. Universal Workers will be required to lift over 50 pounds while transferring or assisting tenants. Carrying Requirements Universal Workers will frequently be called upon to lift and carry objects between 10 and 50 pounds. Universal Workers will frequently be called upon to carry in excess of 50 pounds while transferring or assisting tenants. Sight Requirements Adequate to perform the duties of the position. Hearing Requirements Adequate to perform the duties of the position. Socialization Requirements Universal Workers are required to maintain excellent socialization and communication skills in and around tenants, families and other co-workers. Other Physical Considerations Universal Workers will frequently be called upon for bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting and crouching. These activities will primarily be utilized during tenant care and transferring of tenant. Universal Workers must be mobile in all tenant/tenant areas.
