In-Home Caregiver — Porter, Maine We are seeking a reliable, kind, and engaging caregiver to support an elderly man living with Alzheimer's disease in his home and community in Porter, Maine. This position is funded through the VA at $18-20/hour. The schedule is flexible, and we're hoping to find someone who can work a minimum of 25 hours a week (full-time hours may also be possible for the right candidate). About Him He is a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran, lifelong outdoorsman, electrician-builder, and former stagehand with a great sense of humor — especially when it comes to dad jokes. He lives at home with his daughter's family and his beloved Labrador retriever. He is gentle, friendly, and highly redirectable. Important — Please Read Before Applying Due to Alzheimer's-related symptoms, he experiences disinhibited/uncensored speech. He is not aggressive or violent, but the disinhibition shows up specifically as: sexual comments (which can happen repeatedly throughout a shift), requests for hugs, and occasional attempts to touch caregivers. This is a symptom of his condition, not something personal. This role strongly prefers a male caregiver for his comfort and to minimize this specific dynamic. If you're a woman with direct, relevant experience — meaning you've specifically managed sexual comments and unwanted touching from a dementia client before and are confident holding a firm, calm boundary without it derailing the shift — we're open to a conversation. Whoever takes this role, male or female, needs to be someone who can set a boundary ("hands to yourself," "we don't hug during care time") calmly and repeatedly, without taking it personally and without it disrupting the day. Role Overview The caregiver's primary focus is companionship, dignity, and support — helping him remain socially engaged and age comfortably at home with his family.

Responsibilities include:

Providing companionship and meaningful social engagement Going on drives Support getting dressed Accompanying him to appointments such as the barber shop Sharing meals, reading together, and conversation Supporting daily grooming and personal routines Supporting family with respite from caregiving duties Laundry, meal prep, room cleaning, dishes Gently redirecting and cueing as needed throughout the day, including firm boundary-setting around the behaviors described above Ideal Candidate Patient and emotionally grounded Comfortable working with individuals with Alzheimer's or dementia (formal experience helpful but not required — we have resources through the VA so you can learn along with us) Direct experience managing sexual comments and unwanted touching from a dementia client, with a track record of holding boundaries without escalation, is a strong plus Enjoys conversation, humor, and low-key activities Reliable, respectful, and able to follow guidance from family Valid driver's license preferred Must be scent-free (includes all soaps, detergents, colognes, lotions, etc.) This is a meaningful role for someone who enjoys one-on-one caregiving, values human connection, and wants to make a real difference in a veteran's daily quality of life.
