Shelter Relief PRN Helpmate, Inc., a domestic violence agency in Asheville, NC, seeks several Shelter Relief Staff to join our dedicated team. This is a part-time, non-exempt position reporting directly to the Shelter Coordinator. Shelter Relief are responsible for maintaining facility coverage, supporting shelter operations, and providing service coordination and support to domestic violence survivors within the shelter setting. This position requires overnight and weekend availability and must be available during scheduled hours to respond to emergencies. Key Responsibilities Shelter Operations & Safety:

Conduct regular shelter walk-throughs, monitor cameras and entry doors, complete scheduled room checks, and maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for residents and staff.

Resident Support:

Provide trauma-informed, client-centered support to residents, including shelter orientation, intake supplies, facility tours, room and locker assignments, and assistance with essential needs.

Facility & Program Support:

Maintain cleanliness of common areas and resident rooms, organize and stock supplies, assist with donations and inventory, launder shelter-use items, and prepare rooms for new residents.

Advocacy & Crisis Support:

Provide hotline assistance, safety planning, referrals, and crisis support on all shifts. Transport residents to appointments and essential errands as time allows while maintaining safety and confidentiality. Support childcare volunteers and perform other duties as assigned to support shelter operations and resident well-being.

Requirements & Qualifications Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in social work, human services, or a related field preferred, or a minimum of two years of experience in a social service or related field. Experience in domestic violence services or trauma-informed care is preferred.

Communication & Decision-Making:

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately, both orally and in writing, with the ability to make independent decisions within agency policies, procedures, and budgetary constraints.

Technical & Physical Requirements:

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Access-based data systems. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and climb stairs as part of regular job duties.

Certifications & Other Requirements:

Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification. Must pass a background check and possess a valid driver's license. Overnight and weekend availability is required.

Compensation Shelter Relief Pay Rate:

Base rate pay is $18.24/hour. Additional pay incentives are available for up to 10 years of relevant experience and/or a 10% increase for bilingual fluency, resulting in a maximum starting range of $24.47/hour.
