Domestic Violence Shelter
- Job Summary
- The primary function of an Advocate-on-Duty (AOD) is to maintain the safety and security of the shelter while providing services to the clients within the shelter.
It is also the responsibility of the AOD to monitor the exterior of the shelter and report any threats to appropriate authorities. The AOD is also to monitor the interior of the shelter for maintenance or safety issues and report them as required. An AOD must be trained in domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and homelessness issues, and be able to work with these victims in a caring but professional manner. The AOD will be responsible for answering the crisis line during their shift and will make appropriate referrals. The AOD is responsible for providing community resource information to clients and assisting them in finding services applicable to their situation. The AOD will also maintain records of all services and activities as provided as well as report statistics as needed.
Duties:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Maintain safety and security of the shelter. This includes but is not limited to: - Required walk-throughs of the shelter noting and documenting any maintenance and safety issues as well as the well-being of clients.
- Monitor and enforce policy measures related to the security of the shelter and notify appropriate authorities of any threats to the safety or well-being of the residents.
- Participate in the physical upkeep of the shelter.
- Perform fire drills as directed.
2. Answer crisis line and provide appropriate intervention and referrals. Document as directed. 3. Meet residents' daily needs, advocate for residents, and provide supportive counseling to residents in a manner that helps them become self-sufficient. 4. Ensure residents are fully informed about shelter policies and procedures as well as community resources. This includes but is not limited to:
- Connect residents with community resources and Family Crisis Council resources to assist them in meeting their medical, educational, transportation, housing, legal, vocational, daycare, financial needs as well as any other identified needs.
- Complete standard intake paperwork, develop safety plans, and review shelter policies and procedures.
- Enforce shelter rules and expectations with a trauma-centered approach.
- Apply best practices and utilize lived experiences when interacting and support shelter clients.
- Conduct house meetings as needed. 5. Maintain accurate records of all services and activities of the shelter. This includes but is not limited to:
- Daily notes on each client and updating information as needed.
- Documentation of resources and referrals.
- Notate all statistics and provide to Shelter Director as requested.
