Job Description
CASA of the Great Lakes-Seaway Region is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and highly organized CASA Case Specialist to support our St. Lawrence County program. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. Our mission is to advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are involved in the family court and child welfare systems, helping ensure their safety, stability, well-being, and opportunity to thrive. The CASA Case Specialist provides direct advocacy and case support for children by maintaining regular contact with them, gathering information about their needs and circumstances, attending family court proceedings, and working closely with caregivers, caseworkers, attorneys, court personnel, service providers, and other professionals involved in their lives. The work requires someone who follows through, pays attention to details, communicates professionally, and is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. What You'll Do Manage cases and provide direct advocacy focused on each child's best interests. Develop consistent, appropriate relationships with children through regular visits and contact. Attend family court proceedings and other case-related meetings as needed. Gather and monitor information related to each child's safety, well-being, needs, services, and overall circumstances. Communicate and collaborate with DSS caseworkers, caregivers, attorneys, service providers, school personnel, and other professionals involved in the child's life. Maintain accurate and timely case notes, records, correspondence, and required documentation in an online case management system. Track case deadlines, court dates, visits, contacts, and other required activities. Support new volunteers through case shadowing and practical guidance. Participate in stakeholder meetings, community outreach, fundraising activities, trainings, and other CASA program events. Work collaboratively with staff while also independently managing assigned cases, responsibilities and priorities. Pays close attention to detail and understands the importance of accurate and timely documentation. Is comfortable using Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Is comfortable using, or willing to learn, case management software, Google Calendar, and Zoom. Understands that effective advocacy requires asking questions, following up, and respectfully speaking up to ensure a child's voice and needs are heard. Requirements Applicants must meet all 11 requirements to be considered for the position: 1. Must be 21 years of age or older. 2. High school diploma or equivalent required. 3. Must have strong report writing skills and excellent verbal, organizational, time management, and interpersonal communication skills. 4. Able to maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries. 5. Able to work independently and self-driven to find answers, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and consistently follow through on responsibilities. 6. Able to pass background checks including the New York State Central Register (SCR) for indicated reports of child abuse or neglect. 7. Willingness and ability to complete required CASA training, orientation, and ongoing professional development. 8. Reliable personal transportation, valid driver's license, and automobile insurance. 9. Ability and willingness to travel throughout St. Lawrence County for all program-related activities, with occasional travel to Jefferson County for meetings, training, or work at program/agency headquarters. 10. Ability to maintain a professional appearance and conduct when representing CASA in court, schools, and other professional settings. 11. Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including regularly ascending and descending stairs, walking for extended periods, bending, kneeling, and participating in active play or other physical activities with children as needed. Preferred Qualifications Associate degree or higher in human services, social work, psychology, criminal justice, legal studies, or childhood education; Two or more years of experience in human services or a related field; Experience working with children and families; and Familiarity with family court, foster care, or child welfare. Schedule This is a part-time position averaging 20-25 hours per week . The schedule offers flexibility but must be arranged around family court appearances, child visits, case meetings, trainings, and program needs. Occasional evening availability is required , as some program activities must be scheduled outside traditional business/school hours. Compensation & Benefits $18.00-$22.00 per hour , depending on education, qualifications, and experience. Paid CASA training , orientation, and required professional development. Mileage reimbursement for eligible work-related travel at the current IRS rate or use of rental vehicles when appropriate. Employer-provided laptop for work-related use. Opportunity for a wage increase following successful completion of the 90-day probationary period, based on performance.
