Advocacy is vital for people because it ensures their voices are heard, their rights are respected, and their opportunities for independence are expanded. By offering advocacy, we empower people actively participate in their communities, develop social connections, and live fulfilling lives. We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated person to join our team as a part-time Advocate. This role supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) by promoting independence, self-empowerment, and community inclusion.
Responsibilities:
Provide advocacy and support, helping them navigate community resources, services, and opportunities. Empower people to make informed choices, express their preferences, and participate in decision-making processes. Attend with person in program recreational and social activities such as movies, theatre (seasonally), dinner outings, and shopping trips, health & wellness activities (swimming, yoga, etc.) Foster relationships and create inclusive experiences that build confidence and independence. Meets with program participants, parents, guardians and family members to assist Advocacy Program Coordinator with developing a Life Plan. Gathers information on individual's interest from other sources such as their IP as well as information from residential staff, day program staff and SSA to be included in the Life Plan. Assists with assembling individual binders/folders for each program participant to include their Life Plan; communication/service summaries with families/guardians, photo, photo release, contract, etc. Maintains contact with by phone, e-mail, (or slow mail) with each participants family/guardian as requested by family/guardian. Completes any billing information that needs to be submitted to Advocacy Program Coordinator/Billing Department. Tracks own expenses or mileage and provides any receipts needed for reimbursement. Communicates with families, guardians, and team members about concerns or other important information regarding participants. Assists participants with advocating for themselves effectively for their wants and needs.
