Kupu Kupu is a dedicated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to empowering youth to serve their communities through character building, service learning, and environmental stewardship. National Park Service Kupu is honored to partner with the National Park Service to bring you exciting opportunities to serve through our Conservation Leadership Development Program (CLDP). The CLDP currently has openings at the Honouliuli National Historic Site and Pearl Harbor National Monument. These roles are excellent for early professionals seeking to deepen their connection to community, preserve historic events in Hawaiʻi's history, and learn from dedicated experts in the field. Honouliuli National Historic Park Community Engagement, Research, and Natural Resource Management Specialist Responsibilities This position is a multi-purpose position that covers the full range of activities at the park - community engagement, historical research, and natural resource management on-the-ground at the park. Due to the park's small staff, every position on the team needs to be able to handle multiple duties and roles. Success of the position focuses on not just tasks but relationships. Accomplishment of tasks set while also nurturing positive relationships and interactions is success. These responsibilities and duties would apply to both positions.
In order of importance:
Community Outreach & Educational Programming - Support park staff in outreach events (table events, tours, school presentations, etc.), assist in developing and executing community programs, build community support and engagement as well as facilitate cooperation with other organizations throughout the island. This can include communication/outreach products such as videos, graphics, social media posts, articles, website work, etc. Entry level okay. Volunteer Programming - Provide assistance to the volunteer coordinator to recruit, train, organize, and lead volunteers for the park's various volunteer teams. Participants will help develop new volunteer opportunities for the park. Entry level okay. Vegetation Management - Support the biotechnician by managing invasive and fire-prone vegetation in the park through weed whacking, pesticide spraying, and other related techniques. Vegetation work helps to conserve the natural and cultural resources in the park, supports safe trail conditions for visitation, and mitigates invasive species damage. Some experience preferred. Cultural Resource Management - Assist archeologist with historical research (digital and in-person archival), collections management, archeological feature preservation and recordation, work with descendants for artifacts/document preservation, assist with oral histories, and fieldwork. Some experience preferred. Staff Support - Cover operational needs when staffing is short or needed for other projects. Participants will also assist in gathering and maintaining end-of-year records. Qualifications Bachelor's degree required Working with others is a key part of these duties, and interpersonal skills and problem solving along with strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are important. Comfort with public speaking is helpful and customer service skills will be critical as the position is public facing. GIS experience as well as experience with any graphics or video editing software are preferred, but not required. The ability to work independently (self-starter) and also with a team is strongly desired. Some experience preferred. Bachelor's degree required. Schedule Typical days are M-F and hours 7-4pm, including lunch and breaks. However, outreach events are often on a weekend, primarily Saturday but may include evenings too.
