A Community or Political Organizer works to unite citizens around a concern, ranging from reducing environmental pollution to fighting prejudice. Can be involved in organizing and working on political campaigns to advance social goals.
The Union Gospel Mission Outreach Specialist engages with UGM guests to provide support, build trusting relationships, and connect individuals experiencing homelessness to community resources. This position helps reduce barriers by offering a welcoming presence, direct support, and practical assistance while advancing the mission and values of Union Gospel Mission.
Position Responsibilities:
Build positive, respectful relationships with UGM guests, encouraging them to engage in available services and supports. Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation when needed, utilizing sound judgment and involving appropriate staff when necessary. Assist guests in navigating and accessing community resources, appointments, benefits, and referrals. Help coordinate and support partner programming at UGM, including service provider tabling, support groups, educational presentations, and outreach events. Maintain accurate documentation of guest interactions, referrals, and services provided. Collaborate closely with fellow Outreach Specialists and other UGM staff to coordinate guest support and strengthen connections with community service providers. Serve as a positive representative of Union Gospel Mission with guests, volunteers, partners, and the community. Follow all UGM policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Contribute to a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment for all guests. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology or closely related field. Knowledge of community resources, including public social service and assistance programs. Knowledge of behavioral health and addiction disorders. Knowledge of social and economic factors which influence family life. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Possession of a valid driver's license. Computer proficiency especially in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.). Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities.
