About Hawaii Literacy Hawaii Literacy is a local nonprofit that helps children, adults, and families develop the reading, writing, language, and digital skills needed to succeed in school, find employment, and strengthen their communities. Our free programs serve more than 3,000 keiki and adults each year on Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi Island, and Molokaʻi. We focus on communities where the need for literacy support is greatest and believe that trusted relationships, individualized attention, and community-based services help learners thrive. Position Summary Hawaii Literacy is seeking a caring, dependable, and community-minded person to serve as our Kaʻū Bookmobile Coordinator . The Bookmobile currently visits the Ocean View Boys & Girls Club and the ʻĀina & Co. Farmers Market twice each month, with plans to expand to additional sites in the Kaʻū area. The Coordinator will safely drive and operate the Bookmobile, distribute free books, lead engaging literacy activities, build relationships with children and families, and help strengthen the program's community presence. Applicants who live in, have worked in, or have meaningful ties to Kaʻū are strongly encouraged to apply. Relevant lived experience, community relationships, volunteer service, and professional experience will be considered. This position reports to the Bookmobile Program Manager. Key Responsibilities Safely and consistently drive a 21-passenger-size Bookmobile van to scheduled sites. Welcome keiki and families and offer free books, reading support, and educational activities. Create a safe, positive, organized, and welcoming learning environment. Lead or support reading, writing, and family literacy activities. Build positive relationships with children, parents, volunteers, community partners, and host sites. Promote the Bookmobile and represent Hawaii Literacy professionally in the community. Help identify opportunities to expand the program to additional Kaʻū locations. Maintain accurate records of attendance, books distributed, reading time, activities, and learner outcomes. Organize and maintain the Bookmobile, books, supplies, and activity materials. Communicate regularly with the Bookmobile Program Manager and help guide staff or volunteers as needed. Work Schedule Approximately 7-15 hours per week , primarily on weekday afternoons between 12:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The schedule will depend on site visits and program needs. Occasional staff meetings, training sessions, and community events may also be required. Minimum Qualifications Valid Hawaiʻi driver's license and clean driving record. Ability to safely and confidently drive a vehicle approximately the size of a 21-passenger van. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is not required. Experience working with groups of children and a genuine interest in helping keiki learn. Ability to encourage positive behavior and enforce rules calmly, consistently, and fairly. Caring, patient, dependable, and committed to helping children develop confidence and a love of reading. Knowledge of or meaningful connections to Kaʻū and the communities served. Strong interpersonal, communication, reading, writing, spelling, and grammar skills. Ability to work independently, take initiative, solve problems, and use limited space and resources creatively. Basic computer proficiency, including email and Excel or similar spreadsheet programs. Ability to maintain accurate program records and respond to communications promptly. Reliable transportation to and from the Bookmobile's designated location. Ability to safely enter and exit the vehicle using stairs and lift at least 30 pounds. Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check and provide two to three professional references. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading reading, educational, enrichment, family literacy, or community outreach activities. Knowledge of literacy instruction, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, or reading comprehension. Experience recruiting, coordinating, or supervising volunteers. Fluency or proficiency in languages commonly spoken in Hawaiʻi, including ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Samoan, Chuukese, Marshallese, Tagalog, or Ilocano.
