You will recruit, support, and train volunteer tutors while ensuring that students are thoughtfully matched with tutors who help them succeed. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator strengthens engagement with volunteers, students, families, and partners throughout the Long Beach & South Bay area (Region 04), including Long Beach, San Pedro, South Bay Cities, Carson, Lakewood, Norwalk, Compton, Lawndale, Torrance, and Gardena. Compensation and Work Model To be considered for this role, applicants must currently reside in the Long Beach or South Bay (Region 04) service area.
Compensation:
$22.00-$25.00/hr, DOE. The title and rate will be based on the candidate's qualifications, job-related experience and internal equity.
Position Type:
Full-time, hybrid position with a telework agreement.
Travel Expectations:
Local travel is required. School on Wheels offers paid drive time and mileage reimbursement. Personal vehicle use is required for field-based outreach, community events, presentations, and first sessions on a weekly basis. Valid California driver's license and auto insurance are required. Evening and weekend work are required to supervise the first tutoring sessions, communicate with volunteers, and complete the requirements of this position. School on Wheels offers flex time to accommodate shifting schedules.
Physical Requirements:
Lifting of material donations, including backpacks and school supplies, is required periodically. What You'll Do Volunteer Recruitment, Engagement, and Retention Develop and implement strategies to recruit new volunteers through online platforms, community events, and partnerships with local organizations. Provide ongoing support, development, and coaching to volunteer tutors. Organize and conduct in-person and online volunteer training sessions to ensure volunteers are fully prepared for their roles. Focus on volunteer retention and appreciation to acknowledge the impact on students. Establish rapport and increase volunteer retention through phone calls, emails, in-person check-ins, and volunteer appreciation events. Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation, hours logged, and impact. Highlight star volunteers and students by sharing success stories in our newsletter. Community Outreach & Partnerships Manage and support Group Tutoring sites through ongoing communication with partners and volunteers, and regular site visits. Support Student Success Partner with the Student Support Coordinator to identify the best student volunteer matching. Support and ensure pre- and post-assessments are completed by SOW's volunteers. Identify and celebrate star students and volunteers throughout the year. Help recruit students by building relationships with school districts, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and group homes, and conducting outreach. Facilitate first tutoring sessions in-person and virtually. Actively participate in team meetings and individual supervision meetings. Maintain accurate student, volunteer, and partnership information in Salesforce. Required Qualifications Must live within the 'Region 04' area Minimum of 1-2 years of experience coordinating, managing, or supporting volunteers, or external partnerships. Comfortable conducting community outreach, presenting to groups, and building relationships with diverse audiences. Experience in volunteer coordination, education, or related fields. Cultural humility, empathy, and sensitivity towards students experiencing homelessness. Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills. You will connect with- volunteers, shelter staff, families experiencing homelessness, and students of all ages and backgrounds. Must be comfortable with outreach in various capacities, including working in homeless shelters and surrounding areas. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in fast-paced environments. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a team. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual Spanish-speaking is preferred. Proficiency with Google Workspace; Experience with Salesforce is strongly preferred. Familiarity with Long Beach, Compton, or South Bay communities and organizations, with the ability to engage and build relationships with community partners.
