The Aberdeen Area Humane Society is seeking an organized, creative, and people-focused Community Engagement Coordinator to manage the shelter's public communications, community outreach, front-desk operations, and general administrative data entry. This position serves as an important connection between the shelter and the community. The ideal candidate will communicate professionally and compassionately, create engaging social media content, provide excellent customer service, maintain accurate records, and help promote the shelter's animals, programs, needs, and events.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Social Media and Communications Develop, schedule, and publish content across the shelter's social media platforms. Create animal spotlights, adoption promotions, stray-animal posts, courtesy posts, medical updates, supply requests, and fundraising promotions. Gather accurate information, photographs, and updates from shelter staff before publishing content. Respond appropriately to public comments and messages or route inquiries to the correct staff member. Maintain a consistent, professional, and compassionate public voice for the organization. Community Outreach and Events Represent the humane society at community events, presentations, and outreach activities. Build and maintain positive relationships with community members, businesses, volunteers, and partner organizations. Coordinate event promotion, public communication, volunteers, and event logistics. Support fundraising events while working within the direction and oversight of the Board of Directors and Shelter Manager. Help identify opportunities to increase community awareness, involvement, adoptions, donations, and volunteer participation. Front Desk and Customer Service Welcome visitors and provide friendly, professional assistance. Answer telephone calls, monitor messages, and route questions to the appropriate staff member. Respond to general questions about adoptions, donations, volunteering, shelter services, and events. Support communication with adoption applicants while directing application screening and required reference checks to the Adoption Paperwork Coordinator. Receive and document monetary and in-kind donations. Assist with accurate front-desk cash handling and daily transaction records. Data Entry and Administrative Support Complete general administrative and front-desk data entry accurately and promptly. Enter adoption information into PetPoint. Provide administrative data-entry support for animal intake records using information supplied by the Lead Kennel Coordinator. Maintain organized front-desk, volunteer, communication, donation, and event records. Protect confidential information and follow shelter policies regarding records and public communication. Assist the Shelter Manager with volunteer communications and administrative coordination. Qualifications and Skills Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience managing business or organizational social media accounts is preferred. Customer-service, office, communications, marketing, nonprofit, or community-outreach experience is preferred. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to enter and maintain accurate information in databases and electronic records. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, adopters, donors, and members of the public. Sound judgment when handling sensitive information, public comments, and emotionally difficult situations. Comfortable working in an animal-shelter environment around dogs, cats, animal noise, odors, and cleaning products. Compassion for animals and support for the mission of the Aberdeen Area Humane Society. Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with the Shelter Manager and other shelter staff. Other Duties Work one weekend per month minimum, additional weekends and occasional holidays or evenings as needed. Follow all safety and confidentiality protocols. Assist with other administrative or operational tasks as assigned by the Shelter Manager
SCHEDULE & WORK ENVIRONMENT 20-30
hours/week (with full time potential), minimum of one weekend a month required, additional weekends may be necessary. Indoor office/front desk setting with frequent public interaction. Occasional off-site work at community events. Animal-shelter work can be busy, unpredictable, emotional, and deeply rewarding.
