Position Summary The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair seeks a Director of Religious Education to lead our programs for children and youth with a caring spirit, and in a collaborative and organized fashion. Working within a half-time schedule, the Director will lift up a team of volunteers, maintain a safe and welcoming Sunday program, support families, and provide faith formation that is grounded in Unitarian Universalist values. All aspects of the DRE's position and its relationship to UUCM are guided by UUCM's covenants with LREDA, UUA and other applicable institutions. Because this is a part-time position, the program will depend upon shared congregational ownership and active volunteer participation. Healthy, consistent and organized communication is necessary. Primary Responsibilities Plan and manage Sunday religious education programming for children and youth. Select or adapt curricula appropriate to enrollment, available resources,UU values. Be present on Sunday mornings when religious education is offered, except during approved leave. Recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteer teachers and assistants. Prepare lesson materials, volunteer assignments, and program calendars. Prepare or see that classrooms are prepared. Welcome new families and communicate regularly with parents and caregivers. Cataloging the Program's gifts and challenges, implementing useful improvements, and collaboratively vision for growth. Maintain enrollment, attendance, emergency-contact, and volunteer records. Administer UUCM's Safe Congregations policies, including required screening, training, classroom ratios, and incident reporting. Collaborate with ministers, staff, lay leaders, families, and volunteers, and be open to an exchange of respectful constructive feedback, in the service of the program. Integrate families into the life of the congregation by communicating and managing multigenerational opportunities. Participate in selected multigenerational services, multigenerational service elements, and congregational events. Manage the religious education budget and purchase supplies responsibly. Attend appropriate staff and leadership meetings within the established work schedule. Identify responsibilities that exceed available time, volunteers, or funding and work with the supervisor to establish priorities. Priorities for the Half-Time Position The Director's principal priorities will be: Safe and dependable programming. Recruitment and support of volunteers. Clear communication with families. Compliance with safety policies and procedures. Sustainable programming consistent with enrollment and available resources. Additional family programs, trips, youth activities, or expanded lifespan education may be offered when adequate staff time, volunteer leadership, and funding are available. Qualifications Experience working effectively with children, youth, and families. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to recruit, guide, and support volunteers. A deep understanding of child and adolescent development and differing learning needs. Commitment to inclusion and respect across diverse identities, backgrounds, abilities, and family structures. Sound judgment, discretion, and appropriate professional boundaries. Ability to learn and support Unitarian Universalist values and congregational life. Comfort using common office, communication, and virtual-meeting technology. Successful completion of required background and reference checks. Current or obtainable CPR, AED, and First Aid certification. Experience in religious education, teaching, youth programming, social work, nonprofit programming, or a related field is preferred. Familiarity with Unitarian Universalism is valued. Schedule This position averages approximately 20 hours per week. Sunday mornings and other established program hours during the regular program year are core working hours. The remaining schedule will be established with the supervisor and will include planning, administration, communication, volunteer support, and meetings. The schedule may vary around holidays and special programs. Additional hours must be approved in advance and handled in accordance with UUCM policy and applicable wage-and-hour requirements.
