Job Description

Nursery Coordinator New Bridges Presbyterian Church Hayward, CA Job Details Part-time $25.21 - $26.39 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Early childhood education Daycare center experience High school diploma or GED Diaper changing Preschool experience Pediatric first aid Full Job Description Nursery Coordinator New Bridges Presbyterian Church Position Summary The Nursery Coordinator creates a safe, nurturing space for children ages 0-5 during Sunday worship and church events. This is a hands-on caregiving role that also involves coordinating and supporting volunteers to ensure consistent, quality care. We're looking for someone who genuinely loves caring for young children and is comfortable serving in a Christian community context — someone who shares our heart for families and for building a welcoming place for the youngest members of our congregation. Responsibilities Sunday Care The Coordinator arrives by 9:30 AM to prepare the space and welcomes children beginning at 9:50 AM. Responsibilities include providing attentive, developmentally appropriate care; planning and facilitating simple age-appropriate activities; providing snacks and water; changing diapers; offering nap time as needed; and maintaining a clean, organized nursery. Screen use is not permitted for childcare or entertainment. Safety & Check-In The Coordinator ensures all children are signed in and out by a parent or guardian, collects and maintains contact information, follows all church safety policies, and completes required trainings (including mandated reporter certification and CPR/First Aid). Volunteer Coordination The Coordinator recruits and maintains a base of nursery volunteers, schedules 1-2 volunteers each Sunday, and provides guidance and support during their service. Fostering a positive, appreciative environment for volunteers is an important part of this role. Communication & Accountability The Coordinator communicates regularly with the Pastor (Head of Staff) regarding needs, concerns, or updates, and provides advance notice of any absence or delay, with coverage arranged before the absence occurs. Schedule & Hours Sundays, approximately 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM (roughly 2.5 hours per week), plus occasional additional hours for church events as agreed upon in advance. Total hours will typically range from 10-15 per month. Compensation This is a non-exempt, hourly position compensated at $22.00-$25.00 per hour, in accordance with applicable state and local wage laws. Any hours beyond the regular Sunday schedule require advance approval from the Pastor. All hours must be recorded using the Clockify app. Work should not be performed off the clock; any needed corrections should be communicated promptly to the Pastor. Time Off & Leave This position allows 4 Sundays off per year, to be scheduled at least two weeks in advance with the Pastor. Time off is unpaid. In accordance with California law, the Coordinator accrues sick leave beginning with 6 hours upon hire, then at a rate of 1 hour per 20 hours worked, up to a maximum of 80 hours. Sick leave may be used for qualifying reasons as defined by law, with as much notice as possible given and coverage coordinated when feasible. Qualifications We're looking for someone with at least 1-2 years of hands-on experience caring for young children (ages 0-5) in a setting such as daycare, preschool, church nursery, or a consistent nanny or babysitting role. Strong candidates will have experience with infants and toddlers — including feeding, diapering, and nap routines — and a track record of creating engaging, age-appropriate activities. Comfort communicating with parents and working alongside volunteers or team members is important. A background in a church or faith-based setting is helpful, as is experience supporting children from diverse cultural or linguistic backgrounds, but neither is required. All candidates must successfully complete a background check and required trainings within a reasonable timeframe after hire, and must adhere to the Church Employee Handbook. Employment This position reports to the Pastor (Head of Staff). The first 90 calendar days serve as an introductory period, during which performance, reliability, and fit for the role will be evaluated — and during which the Coordinator has the opportunity to get to know the expectations and culture of New Bridges Presbyterian Church.
